My Witchy Names

A list of names that are meant to inspire me toward my ritual name.
  1. Hazel
    • Origin:

      English
    • Meaning:

      "the hazelnut tree"
    • Description:

Hazel has a pleasantly hazy, brownish-green-eyed, old-fashioned image that more and more parents are choosing to share. Former Old Lady name Hazel reentered the popularity lists in 1998 and now is near the top of the charts.
  2. Poppy
    • Origin:

      Flower name, English from Latin
    • Meaning:

      "red flower"
    • Description:

Poppy, unlike most floral names which are sweet and feminine, has a lot of spunk. Long popular throughout the rest of the English-speaking world, Poppy is finally starting to rise toward the top in the US, where it entered the Top 1000 for the first time in 2016.
  3. Winter
    • Origin:

      Word name
    • Description:

Fresher, brisker and, yes, cooler than Summer or Autumn or Spring, Winter is now a full-fledged female choice, especially since Nicole Richie and Joel Madden used it for daughter Harlow's middle name, and Gretchen Mol picked it as her daughter's first, as did media mogul Sean Parker. Winter continues to be the preferred spelling and has risen in popularity significantly over the past few years.
  4. Ceridwen
    • Origin:

      Welsh
    • Meaning:

"beautiful as a poem; crooked women"
    • Description:

A mythological Welsh name with an intriguing sound, Ceridwen appears in several Welsh legends, in which she is an an enchantress and the owner of the cauldron of poetic inspiration. She is also associated with the great bard, Taliesin, with one 16th-century tale recounting that when her servant consumed a potion of wisdom, intended for Ceridwen's son, Ceridwen swallows the servant, who is then reborn through her as the bard.
  5. Emerald
    • Origin:

      Gem name; Persian
    • Meaning:

      "green"
    • Description:

Emerald is the intriguing color and jewel name of the deep green stone treasured as far back as ancient Egypt — it's supposed to open one's heart to wisdom and to love and be good for strengthening relationships — which could make for an interesting, unusual name, particularly with the popularity of so many Em-starting names.
  6. Emlyn
    • Origin:

Variation of Emmeline or Emmalyn, or from Welsh
    • Meaning:

      "rival; round the valley"
    • Description:

As a girl name, Emlyn is likely to be a contracted form of Emmeline or Emmalyn, appealing to those who like drop the middle sound of the aforementioned names, and want something concise, stripped back, and contemporary looking on paper. In this case, Emlyn could mean "rival" from Emmeline or "universal lake, universally pretty" from Emmalyn (if you consider it a smoosh name).
  7. Boudicca
    • Origin:

      Celtic
    • Meaning:

      "victory"
    • Description:

First century queen who led her Brittonic Iceni tribe in revolution against the Romans occupying England. Also found as Boudica, Boadicea (as in bodacious) and in Welsh as Buddug, the historic namesake was defeated and committed suicide, but is still celebrated in England as intelligent and brave. One ancient name that, while unheard these days, could be revived along with such choices as Atticus and Cassius.
  8. Garnet
    • Origin:

      Jewel name, from the French
    • Meaning:

      "pomegranate"
    • Description:

One of the jewel names in use a hundred years ago, due for revival along with sisters Ruby and Pearl.
  9. Bride
    • Origin:

      Irish
    • Meaning:

      "strength or exalted one"
    • Description:

Technically a pet form of Brigid and very commonly heard in Ireland, but pronunciation problems complicate Bride as a name choice in America.
  10. Delight
    • Origin:

      English word name
    • Meaning:

      "gratification or pleasure"
    • Description:

The mythical daughter of Eros and Psyche becomes a modern-sounding word name. Danger: could be seen as X-rated.
