Bubbly, bright, and versatile, Phoebe is a name with mythological, biblical, and literary ties. Used since the 17th century, it fell out of fashion in the US during the '60s, only to be revived after it appeared in the 90's TV favorite, Friends.
 
 Since then, it's been on the rise and as of 2024, it sits in the US Top 200 and was given to around 1640 girls. Across the pond in the UK, it's a Top 50 choice, reaching #20 in England and Wales in 2023. 
 
Phoebe is the Latin variation of the Greek name Phoibe, which derived from phoibos, meaning "bright." In classical mythology, Phoebe is the by-name of Artemis, goddess of the moon and of hunting. The masculine version of Phoebe is Phoebus.
 
In the New Testament, Phoebe is a church deaconess. Shakespeare used the name (spelled Phebe) for a rustic denizen of the forest in As You Like It, Phoebe Pynchon was a cheerful young girl in Hawthorne's The House of Seven Gables, while Phoebe is Holden Caulfield's sympathetic, precocious ten-year-old sister in Catcher in the Rye.

Thalia was one of the Three Graces in Greek mythology, and also the Muse of comedy and pastoral poetry, making this a Hellenic choice worthy of consideration. 
 In the Rick Riordan series Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Thalia Grace is the demigod daughter of Zeus. Thalia was also a character on Everwood.
 The single-named Mexican singer Thalia was born Ariadne Thalia Sodi Miranda.
 Thalia had a one-off appearance on the list in 1932 and then reentered the US Top 1000 in 1992, reaching its height of Number 363 in 1993.

Mythology Names I'd Actually Use

I love so many mythological names but some of them are far too wacky to grace (or rather burden) a child with, so they are relegated to the potential pet list. These myth names and names relating to myths and legends are ones that I've found and would actually consider using. The list will probably be added to regularly as I come across more and more beautiful names. Currently, most are from Greek mythology (because I have studied Greek myth the most), but there are some from Roman mythology and a couple from Norse mythology and Arthurian legends.
