Water Names: April showers bring thoughts of Rain and River
Thalassa
Thalassa is a Greek mythological name, delicate and unusual. She was portrayed as the primeval spirit of the sea, rather than as a goddess. In ancient Roman mosaics, she was depicted as half-submerged in the sea, wearing bands of seaweed. Thalassa could make a lovely, longer, more ornate, alternative to the more common Thalia.

I’ll add Hebrew names Agam (meaning lake), which I hear is used a bit in Israel, and Mayim (meaning water) as in Bialik. The Passover story always makes me think of water as Miriam hid baby Moses in a basket among the rushes at the river… Happy last days of Pesach!

I knew a little boy named Nile. I thought it was such a wonderful boy. Unfortunately, he was autistic and his mother (the parents were separated) thought that it was God’s way of punishing them for having given him a “heathen name” and so she started calling him Adam. As you can imagine, being called by 2 different names did him no favors.
Such a sad story for what I always thought was such a wonderful and evocative name.
When I first came across the name Niall I thought it was pronounced like Nile, but have been informed that it is closer to Neil, which I find a shame.

Love many of these! But isn’t Lucerne a brand of milk?? Pretty sure it is here in Canada anyway!

I like Rain quite a bit– I knew a Rainn (male) in high school, and never really questioned the name. I actually like it a lot.

I really like Loire (pronounced the French way!) & Maris, River, Nile…there are some great suggestions here. I do like ‘Constance’ for Lake Constance in Germany as well! I did know a girl named Seneca (one of the 5 Finger Lakes in the US) growing up, and thought it was a very pretty name!

One of my best friends and her sister both have water middle names. They are named after their parents’ favorite vacation spots. My friend’s middle name is Chelan for the lake her sister’s middle name is Mackenzie for the river. So they are Alaina Chelan and Lauren Mackenzie.

Caspian, Neva, and Bay get my vote (though Bay is my daughter so I’m biased on that one).

Don’t forget Rivers Cuomo, who is the frontman of band Weezer. He grew up in some kind of hippy commune!
