How To Find A Girly Name With A Tomboy Nickname
A Nameberry visitor commented recently that she loved ultra-feminine proper names with tomboyish nicknames. That’s a sentiment we echo.
If you’re torn between girls’ names with a conventionally female image and ones that sound more androgynous, these choices have it all. They give you (and your daughter) the choice between going totally girly and sidestepping conventional gender identity, at least when it comes to your name.
Some very feminine names with tomboyish nicknames are:
Alexandra –Â Alex
Charlotte –Â Charlie
Daniella –Â Dani
Francesca –Â Frankie
Frederica –Â Freddi
Georgia –Â Geo
Harriet –Â Harri
Julia, Juliet or Juliana –Â Jules
Matilda –Â Matti
Michaela/Mikayla – Micki or Mike
Rosemary –Â Romy

Word of warning on this trend: I’m a Julia who is admittedly not particularly girly. Unfortunately, this leads people to tend to call me “Jules”. I hate being called Jules. It lends itself to thoughts of British chauffeurs, likes Giles and Jeeves. I’d prefer to be called by my name but my personality just forces people’s minds to go with Jules for some reason. I hate it so much I started to go by Claire. A girl’s name with no nicknames! Take that, Jules!

There were several older and more obvious girly names with tomboy nicknames I didn’t include, like Teresa/Teri and Geraldine/Gerri and Jessica/Jessie. With many of these lists, you just have to draw the line somewhere or they’d get too unwieldy.
Stella Says:
I definitely enjoyed this list. Aurora has always been high on my list for its namesake value (my grandmother’s name) and for having a cute nickname like Rory. Aurora can be hard to pronounce sometimes, so a nickname would definitely crop up!
realpraise Says:
Just plain Matt would work for Matilda, too! I love Clementine – Clem. Great list! Jack works for Jacqueline.
tikicatt Says:
Cute list. I was a serious tomboy with a girly name with girly nicknames – Sara. With Sadie and Sally as the nick choices? No way! Lived thru it. My fav senior couple at church are Pat and Leslie. Leslie is the male. I giggle at all the people who don’t figure out the who is whom. You do see lots of seniors that both have the male names. Dick and Tommie, Billie and Bob – it cracks me up as a name lover!
marikm Says:
Gus as a nickname for Augusta? Gus I strongly dislike for a guy or a girl. I appreciate tomboy nicknames, but not when they sound like your local gas station attendant. How about Augie? Much cuter!
I feel the same way about Hank… what about just plain Henri/y? Not that I particularly like that either…
I love Ari, Clem, Jules, and Charlie – and my very my favorite is Romy!
Oh, and for Alex, which is my sister’s nickname, Alexi is another option that keeps it masculine.
Samantha Says:
My parents adored this trend; they loved that we had feminine full names but masculine nicknames so we could go by them if we ever needed to. My sisters and I are Sam (Samantha), Jack (Jacqueline), and Alex (Alexandria)! Mattie for Matilda and Rory for Aurora are on my personal list.
Ashton Says:
What about Rett as a nickname for Henrietta?
Olivia Says:
While my name – Olivia – is completely overused and disgustingly popular these days, I sure thought it would make this list. It’s one of the frilliest names I can think of and “Ollie” is one of the most tomboyish names I can think of. Granted, I hate being called Ollie, but that’s irrelevant.

Love this blog! Faves are Alexandra/Alex, Aurora/Rory, Antonia/Toni, and Rosemary/Romy. Wish I’d seen this list when I was pregnant with my daughter.
Maddy Says:
One of my favorites which isn’t up there is Jacqueline-Jack
Gigi Says:
My friend Jacinta goes by Joey
remy Says:
What’s wrong with your friendly local gas station attendant?
Whyett Says:
Some of my favorites are Rosemary/Romy, Henrietta/Henri, and Cordelia/Cory! Also, Andrea/Andy, which isn’t on the list.
Sunny Says:
My daughter’s name is Raven, we all call her “Ray.”
Flip Says:
“How about Augie?” Just wait till they reach 15 – then you’ll know what was wrong with that name…
Carmen Says:
I love girly names for the specific reason they are feminine and frilly. Why would I negate that with a tomboyish nn? Hmm.
I cringe when people try to call my Ekaterina, “Kat” or “Ekat” in person.
vanislandgal Says:
I’m a Julie and I love the nickname Jules. Most people call me Jules because it sounds casual and pretty. I love it!

I have three cousins that are sisters: Nicole (Nick/Nicky), Elisha (Lee), and Melissa (Mel). We always got a kick out of it.
Ellie Says:
Just to start off, “how about Augie?” PUH-LEASE! as soon as the poor child reached their teenage years…. well they’d probably hate you forever.
Secondly, my name’s Eliana (pronounced al-ee-ah-nah), which is quite feminine. personally, i think it’s a pretty and old fashioned name, and although it doesn’t have a ‘boyish’ nickname, ellie or el still works fine. (:

I think Camilla nn Cam is adorable.
Susanna Says:
I personally don’t really like girl names with tomboy nickname becus of one reason … their charactors are always very confuse !!!
I’ve knew Sam ( Samantha ) and she’s super crazy lady. She’s very girly and emotional but sometimes she acts like boy. Val ( Valerie ) is another kid I know, she’s very tough one but could be really girly in the same time. And ofcus Lex ( Alexandra ) is very very and very weird girl but very smart.
Tres is cute nn for Teresa
Riley Says:
My name’s Riley, which doesn’t need a nickname to sound tomboy-ish. Everyone already assumes I’m a boy when they hear my name ^^ (which I’m perfectly fine with).
My sister’s name is Jacqueline, and she goes by Jack (:
One of my friend’s name is Josephine (named after her grandmother) and we call her Joey.
My cousin’s name is Tabitha and we call her Tab, which I personally think is kind of tomboy-ish.
Leanne Says:
My name is Leanne (Lee-Ann). When I was a kid people wanted to call me Lee-Anna. (I don’t know where they got the A at the end.) I told people to call me Lee if it made it easier for them. I like my name, Leanne and the nickname, Lee.
andrea Says:
In my family I am Andrea but my sister calls me Andi and she is Kendra but I call her Kendi, we always felt like it gave us a secret-sister connection!
Ireland Says:
I LOVE the girly name Harlow with the tomboy nn ‘Harley’

My given name is Martina, and growing up most of my family called me Tina, as there were at least 3 other people with my name at any given time. My grandparents and my one of my cousins called me Marty. I actually preferred Marty, but Tina just sort of stuck from birth.
