Challenge of the Week: Name your perfect family
Calling all name nerds! This question/challenge of the week is aimed at you:
If there weren’t any restrictions—no real life spouse to compromise with, no in-laws to contend with, no last name to match, no concerns about overpopulation or putting six fantasy children through college–
WHAT WOULD YOUR IDEAL, PERFECTLY NAMED FAMILY BE?
The family can be any size you like.

pam Says:
I have a diary from when I was 11 in which I did this. I had five children: Sandy, Michael, Lisa, David, and Amy (in that order).
Although I love having sons, I think my ideal name family is all girls and is maybe something like:
Susannah
Eliza
Josephine
Marguerite
Bridget nn Bea
I think I have to stop at five because even in fantasy I start shaking when I imagine having more than five children.
And yes, I know that Bridget/Bea is kind of an outlier, but that was my grandmother’s name and I love it!
vivtaliesin Says:
Adding onto my kids names: Rigby Harrison (Rig), Miller Thomas (Mills), Wren Charlotte Amity (Birdie), Eloise Cleo Bellamy (Lola) & –
Everett Cabot (Rhett)

Agnes Willa Hart (Aggie)
Leo Morrison (Lion)
ohhh i could keep going but i won’t wish that upon myself!

abeezee Says:
If I had 4 girls, I would go with my favorite classics:
Katharine, Caroline, Abigail, and Grace
But I have 3 amazing boys so never got to use any of these!
abeezee Says:
I would love to know how many kids most name nerds have!
Do you think we have large families just so we can use our favorite names???
pam Says:
Haha, Abeezee, the two never connected for me. But my husband is one of eight kids and I always thought all that naming opportunity was wasted on my parents-in-law, who named them Jane, John, Jone, Tom, Tim…. you get the picture. What any of us could have done with those names!
coolteamblt Says:
If I had my way, I would have:
Gideon Kenneth
Daphne Margaret
Jane Amelia
Ezra Calder
Simon Alan
Louisa Jewell
As it is, I have a James Kenneth, and if we have a second, it’ll either be Rhys Calder or Daphne Margaret.
sunshine7cw Says:
Arlo Harrison (already have him!)
Esther Kate
Daphne Joan
In real life we will probably only have one more (and it will probably end up being another boy since I have a bajillion girl names I love), but this would solve our dilemma since I LOVE Esther and my DH loves Daphne!
libermama Says:
Can we share our REAL children’s names, too? (I have ELEVEN children. And no, it wasn’t just so I could use my favorite names. Well, not totally… *wink*)

klcalder2 Says:
Well, I love the two names we’ve already chosen, save for one middle. So, my first two of my dream family stay. Altogether, I’d love to have:
Arabella Lily (Belle/Bella)
Jude Alexander
Nora Hermione
Theodore Noah (Theo/Teddy)
Lyra Rosalie
Ruthy Says:
I wouldn’t be able to name my children all of these names because I don’t like to have a lot of the same letters.
As you can see I have a lot of girls names that I love.
Poppy Adelaide
Henry Winston
Camille Alexandria
Peter Joshua
Vera Isabella Jane
Amelia Eloise
Charles Frederick
Viola Rosemund
Coraline Sorrel
Ava Winifred
Grace Sofia
Lousia Margaret
Lucy Eleanor
Linus Gregory (can’t use Charles, Lucy, and Linus all in one family
LJandRL Says:
Ooo wow, so fun, and so difficult! I’m just going to do first names as middles would be too hard!
Emrys (vetoed)
Claudie (our no 1 girl name)
Sophia (too popular to use, but I love it)
Lennox (
LJandRL Says:
Ahh, somehow entered that without finishing!
Emrys (vetoed)
Claudie (our no 1 girl name)
Lennox (on our boys list)
Sophia (too popular to use, but I love it)
Ivy (on our list)
Margot (sounds bad with our surname)
Penelope nn Nell (on our list)
Rafferty nn Rafe (on our list)
Twins – Harriet and Adeline nn Hattie and Addie (on our list too
)
I probably wouldn’t differ too much from the names on our list, with the exception of Emrys and Sophia. We’ve thought about the names we agree on and that work with our surname etc so far in advance that I’ve become very attached to them now, and there aren’t too many names I’m sad not to be able to use. Emrys would be the only name I’m still hoping he’ll change his mind on! Ha.
Like most Berries, in a dream world I’d have lots of kids and mostly girls – they’re so much fun to name!
And to respond to a previous poster, I want a large (4-8) family for many reasons but I definitely think one of them is that I want to use lots of my favourite names!
Great challenge.
Trustedwriter Says:
Wow, so many responses! Apparently we Berries like our fantasy families.
Some of these don’t have middle name matches I love, but here goes. Already having a little Charles Theophilus, it would be delightful to add…
Marcus Ebenezer
Cornelia Margaret (Cora)
Adrian Aquila
Sylvia Pearl
Arthur Nicodemus
Simon Cornelius
Walter Octavian (heh…just for kicks)
Catherine Hermione
Okay, so I just went hog-wild there.
I guess with no last name to worry about, there would be some J names in there, too, but I stuck with names I actually want to give my children in real life. (Except Catherine; we know a Catherine and my husband would prefer us not to use names of people we already know. He also hates Cornelia, and the practice of giving a long name just to get a nickname out of it; he’d rather just name them the short name. But I love simple Cora by itself, too, so that is okay with me.)
Trustedwriter Says:
Correction: I ended up taking away the names without middle names, Jemima and Theodora, and Hermione, which I realized could be a middle name for Catherine.
So I do love all those matches.
kyemsma Says:
My “ideal” family would have 2 sets of twins:
Anna Caroline and Rose Catherine

Jack Donovan and Liam Patrick

Imogen Antoinette May
Rosa Emmeline Veronique
(love both the girls names but worry that Imogen is going to become too trendy)
Ariel_Michal Says:
Sebastian Liam (nn Bastian) – I love the name Sebastian, but since my name is Ariel I could never name my son Sebastian (thanks to The Little Mermaid).
Susannah Claire (Anna)
Allegra Rose (Ally) – I go back and forth on whether I would actually name a daughter Allegra, because of the allergy medication. I do love the name though.
Noah Gabriel
Ethan Isaac
CaliRN4kids Says:
I LOVE stuff like this!! I am a HUGE name nerd & have been since I was little (I had my “kids’” names picked out at 10! – I never went with any of them – my tastes changed, but I’m actually starting to go back to some of them). I’ve always wanted multiples, but never had them (my brother did tho – twins!) so my Fantasy Family has many multiples.
Here goes:
Aaron Jack
Jason Kyle (Jason was my “childhood name”, I love it again!)
TRIPLETS: Reid Nathaniel
Rhys Mitchell
Rowan Keith
TWINS: Greyson Everett
Gage Dawson
Abigail Elizabeth (nn Abby Liz)
Brooke Elyse
TWINS: Julia Hope
Jillian Kate
Nora Jane or Nora Kimberly (Kimberly was my “childhood name”)
TRIPLETS: Audrina Simone (nn. Audrey)
Autumn Camille
Aurora Eden
And after all that, I’ll have to get my tubes tied & check myself into an insane asylum cuz that’s ALOT of kids!!
Also, I just want to say to “Pam” that I really like the name Bridget & Bea – it’s not too out there – it’s really cute! And to “libermama”, I love two of your middle names cuz my name is Dawn Noelle!!!! I loved reading all of your name choices ladies! What a fun project for us name nerds! Thanks Nameberry!!
babynamesrule Says:
I don’t know why it appeals to me so, but I always love the idea of having three boys;
Hunter Philip
Austin Charles
Chase Oliver
I imagine them playing by a pond, catching frogs and building crudely made forts out of sticks. They sound like a blast, don’t they?
lnxn09 Says:
I’ll do three of each!
Genevieve Clara
Lorelei Odette
Scarlett Diana
Emmett Jude
Dashiell Brooks
Stefan Lyle
lisaoski Says:
While my mother has 10 kids, the vast naming opportunities were wasted on her: (Lynn Anne, Terri Anne, Robert Alan, Michael James, Kristine Marie, Shawn Michael, Jessica Lynn, Katherine Elizabeth, Lisa Marie, Amanda Kristine)
I want to have just as many, if not more, children than my mother. I’m not sure on what I’d name all of them but these are my five absolute favorites in no particular order:
Hugo
Aldo
Rodrigo
Isadora
Helena
Nyxiaus Says:

Entangler Says:
My sons would be Rowan, Sebastian, Emory and Caspian and my daughter would be Noa Sophia Ciel. The boys would have middles too I’ve just no idea what they would be. Maybe Rowan Elliott, sebastian Arrow, Emory Seth and Caspian Emmett.
pam Says:
I’m so enjoying reading these lists. Although Linda usually does the Question or Challenge of the Week, this one was my idea because this is what I used to do in the early days of my name obsession, create families around their names. And reading the lists not only brings back that pleasurable activity but really evokes a feeling for each imaginary family, one dashing and adventurous, another one demure and old-fashioned…
CharacterNamer Says:
My perfect family would be:
Emily Gemma
Twins Jasper Milo and Oliver Frederick
Triplets Isabella Catherine, Clara Hermione, and Luna Elizabeth
Henry Charles
Twins Lily Beatrice and Violet Adelaide
I can’t possibly imagine having 9 kids, the most would probably be 5. Thank goodness I don’t have to try narrowing it down for a couple decades!
mariah778 Says:
Well, I have always wanted a lot of kids, a boy as the oldest to protect my daughters! and a girl as the youngest lol!
So, my dream family:
James Steven
Tessa Caroline
Diana Vivienne
Aaron Dominic

Cordelia
Elodie (nn Lottie?)
Nikolai (I’ve always been way more into girl names, but to throw in one boy . . .)

auroradawn Says:
I felt as if I’d been let loose in a candy store and told to take as much as I could carry! I loved reading everyone else’s lists, too. My ideal dream family has always been twelve children, six boys and six girls, and even with that many it was terribly difficult to narrow down the choices. I did this when I was about ten years old, also, so:
My list THEN:
Robert Isaac
Nathan Samuel
Zebulun Ishmael
Joel Peter
Abram Mark
Emmanuel Jordan
Anna Mercy
Judith Rachel
Leah Amber
Autumn Rebekah
Abigail Aspen
Judy Fannah
My list NOW:
Tobias Hugh Justice
James Haven Deliverance
Shadrach Hananiah
Phineas Caedmon
Stefan Barnabas Jude
Ransom Horatius
Una Marguerite
Mairi Susanna Jean
Evangeline Clara Joy
Alice Elisabeth
Eden Reverie
Eulalia Glory
I’d like a set of twins or two in there, but I don’t know where! This was so much fun.
Aguus Says:
I would use:
For girls:
Helena (pronounced like “Ellen” with an “a”)
Victoria
Delfina
Irina
Catalina
Clementina

Federico
Juan Ignacio
chapitaism Says:
Marco Antonio, Gianluca Vangelis, Matteo Evangelos (triplets)
Rachel Ann
Maurizio Jose
Juan Dario
Julieta Carmina or Julieta Carmine
Juan David or Juan Davide
Angelica Melody (because it sound like angelical melody hahaha it must be December!!)
Ernesto Giovanni (Gio)
Jose Roberto
David and Daniel (twins)
Jonathan
Juan Giuseppe
Rosa Lia Coco
Italo
Ivanka, Irinna (twins again)
I didn’t think too much about it, I just let my mind flow, and I forgot about lastname in order to think freely, some of this names are a surprise to me….I choose them by personality carried in the name, not for being my favorites….I am not sure how they sound in real voice….may be a mess, not really sure if they could work in real world.
My ideal family will have a lot of boys and only a few girls, and at least 1 set of triplets, or twins at least.
Weird thing, they are 19 children names, I just counted until I ended, and that was the amount of brothers my grandpa had. If I only were my great-grandma =D
zoghart Says:
For some reason boys’ names appeal more to me than girls’ names right now, although I think I’d like having girls better. Being Southern, there are some splendid boys’ names on my father’s side of the family (Hardy Elijah, anyone? Although I think he was the great-grandfather who was legendary for rolling in drunk to church, so maybe not.
)
Boys:
Callum Elias (Elias is a great-grandfather from generations back)
Gabriel Ezra (or vice versa)
Henry Isaac
Luke Elliott
Milo Ephraim
Girls:
Rory Alexandra
Imogen Violet (“Ivy” could be a cute nickname. Get it? I.V.?)
Ariane Rebekah (my favorite choice from college, but I don’t know if I would name a child that today. Ariane was Audrey Hepburn’s character in “Love in the Afternoon”)
Annika Rose
Mira Ingrid
But I don’t plan on having kids, so this is moot.
arkishac Says:
Kirstan (my 3 yo)
Hartley Amethyst,
Felicity Peyton,
Irelys Alexia-Sage ,
Romulus Midnight
mariahsweet Says:
Hmm, my fantasy family would be close to my reality! My two little boys plus two sisters to join them
So right now:
Quinn Alexander (almost 3 yo)
Griffin Maxwell (almost 1 yo)
Georgiana Peregrine
Adair Seraphina
And that would be it for me. I don’t think I’d intentionally have more than four even in a fantasy world. I’m not a clown car.. those babies have to come out of somewhere
I’m hoping to use Georgiana Peregrine if we have a daughter the next time we try to conceive. Maybe my dream will come true and it’ll be twin girls
BriV Says:
My Ideal family would have to be
(twins) Phoenix Daniel & Hendrix Steven
Bowie Zane
Bailey Damien
Blayze Joseph
Aleksandra Jessica
Cryant James
Harper Lisa
Acacia Leigh
I dont think I will ever have that many kids and obviously I have more names for boys picked out but If I had to I’d probably go with Bowie Zane and Cryant James. and girls Harper Lisa and Aleksandra Jessica one of Each would be Bowie and Harper or the other way around.
linzybindi Says:

Daphne Emma
Callum Stuart (nn Cal)

Hank Levi
Parker Rosalie
Brady Joseph
Lillian Adele
We have “real” ones we have agreed on but these would be my perfect names for 2 boys 2 girls.
MeganJoy Says:

Job Valor

Tolliver Truett

I don’t have any kids yet, but I want to include at least one family/special meaning name for each and have two middles for each. At this point my kids would be in order:

Kylie Amelia Jane (twin girl)
Piper Addison Louise (twin girl)
Ryan Christina Mary (girl)

(and I would like a boys name but I just haven’t really found any yet.
-Apart from Dante (Don-tay) which rhymes with my name- Bronte (Bron-tay) which pretty much rules that one out..
I also like both Hugo & Louis (Lou-ee) But then there’s already Honora and Laurel so 2 L’s or 2 H’s?? I don’t think so..

Ideal family with no financial restrictions or other restrictions is 3 boys, one girl in that order.
1. Luca Adam
2. Sullivan Webster
3. Elijah Ian
3. Leia Mae OR Maeve Hilary
In reality I would never use Luca and Leia in a sibset- too much star wars! But they are my top names…so it depends which I have first!

Already having my daughter Angelina Christine, and pregnant with my first son, I have a few names in mind!

As for our son, who is due any day now, we still have no clue which name to choose. I am totally stuck! My favorite two are Luca and Matthew. I just cannot decide! I don’t really want to name my children’s first names after anyone in my family, or friends, and Matthew is my cousins’s name. So maybe that will help me decide(:

Oooh this is exciting!! Mine would be:
My name: Dianna Elaine Smith
Husband: Ryan Gosling (lol)
Children:
Althea Persephone “Ally”
Imogen Fifer “Immy”
Juniper Helen “Junie”
Lucille Beatrix “Lucy”
Crispin Malachy “Cris”
Salix Leonardo “Six”
I’m also assuming that name popularity isn’t being factored because I wouldn’t put Lucille with the other names. In real life though I wouldn’t be brave enough to use the other names and would use Lucille lol
