Possibly meaning "friend", the name was adapted from the indigenous Caddo word táy:sha which was used by the Spanish for the Caddo nation. It was originally spelled as Tejas, but Anglicized as Texas. Alternatively, and perhaps less interestingly, it could also come from the Spanish teja meaning "roof tiles".
Texas for girls
If you like your place names bold and undiscovered and if you like Dallas but don't want something in the US Top 1000, then Texas might just be for you. Sporadically and quietly used for girls since the 1880s, nicknames Tex and Tess might appeal.
Meaning "friend", the name was adapted from the indigenous Caddo language word táy:sha which was used by the Spanish for the Caddo nation. It was originally spelled as Tejas, but Anglicized as Texas. Alternatively, and perhaps less excitingly, it could also come from the Spanish teja meaning "roof tiles".
Content creator Helen Johnson (also known as bleuu) chose Texas for her daughter in 2026.
