Milan
In Europe, Milan is a boys' name, but in the US, it's been more popular in recent years for girls, firmly in the Top 1000 where it's been off the official scope for boys for more than 50 years. We see that changing now that the more feminine Mila is becoming more popular for boys and singer Shakira has chosen Milan for her son. But at least in America, Milan -- whether pegged to the sophisticated Italian city or the Slavic name -- will continue to be a unisex choice.
Milan
As Mila rises for girls, so Milan is becoming a more popular option for boys, especially now that singer Shakira has chosen it for her son. Milan is in the Top 10 for boys in The Netherlands and Hungary and in the Top 20 in Belgium. With the first syllable pronounced mee, this could also suggest the Italian city, although the native version Milano is a lot livelier. Milan Kundera was the (male) writer of The Unbearable Lightness of Being.
