The feminine form of Laelius, a Roman family name. Laelia occurs in Christian inscriptions of the late 4th century. Lelia came to Britain in the mid-19th century (from France after the publication in 1833 of George Sand's popular love story 'Lélia'), where it's been used intermittently since.
