It's been over a year. You and your husband, William Jacob Vanderbilt, have adopted the children and gotten closer romantically. Your son, Augustus Edward John Weston Vanderbilt, is now eight years old in second grade and your daughter, Amelia Josephine Grace Weston Vanderbilt, is now seven years old in first grade. They've also made new friends at school, are honors students, and involved with activities. Somehow, they both get invited to sleepovers on the exact same night and they plead so much that you and your husband agree to let them go. The two of you have had plenty of opportunities home alone, but never for so long. To say it's awkward would be an understatement.

The night your kids are at their sleepovers, you're on your way to bed and go down to your husband's study to say good night. He's still sitting at his desk, working. It's late and you tell him to go to bed. He says he will, as soon as he's finished. You go up to your own bedroom (the two of you sleep in different rooms), get into bed, and turn the lights out. You toss and turn for an hour until you realize you never heard your husband come up the stairs. You get out of bed and go back downstairs to find him in the living room, staring at the TV. He says he's been having difficulty falling asleep for some time now and it feels worse tonight because the kids aren't in the house. You sit next to him on the couch and watch TV for thirty minutes before he starts to doze off, resting his head on your shoulder. You can't help but think about how vulnerable he looks sleeping and run your fingers through his brown hair and kiss his forehead. He opens his eyes and looks up at you. He says you're the most beautiful woman...and he kisses you on the lips.

The next morning, the kids return home to discover you and your husband are now sleeping in the same bedroom and are making plans to go on a honeymoon.

You and your husband redecorate his bedroom to be your joined bedroom. What does it look like?

Your name is Mallory Anna Cohen and you are 22 years old, fresh out of college and working as an aquarium curator. You are single and living on your own in Greeley, Colorado. That changes when you receive tragic news: a long-time friend of yours, Sadie Abigail Grant, and her husband, Ivan Jacob Grant, are killed in a car accident. They leave behind a 5-year-old son, Silas Colin, and a 4-year-old daughter, Eden Helena.

Your friend's will stated she wanted you to have her kids, while her husband's will said that he wanted the kids to go to his best friend, Charles Edmond Collins, III "Charlie". He's 23 years old, single, working as a lawyer, and owns a house in Breckenridge, CO. You've known for the past three years as your friend's husband's friend, but you're not about to shrink away from the responsibility. Nor is he apparently, because he says he's more than willing to take full custody the kids. You say the two of you should work out some kind of custody agreement, such as he has the kids during the week and you could take them on weekends. But by sheer dumb luck--or a cruel twist of fate--a fire breaks out in your apartment building, nearly scorching your entire apartment, and you have no choice but to look for a new place to live. Charlie asks if you would like to live with him and the kids. You say yes.

You and Charlie become friends while living together and looking after the kids. But then your Sadie's estranged mother, Linda Marie, suddenly comes out of the woodwork to get custody of her grandchildren. Your friend grew up in foster homes and you know her mother is a drunk, which is why you and Charlie have no intention of letting her have the kids. You hire the best lawyer you can find to help in the custody battle. Six months go by and the grandmother is still unrelenting and the judge for some reason seems to be favoring her. You and Charlie feel as though your options are slowly running out until your lawyer offers an outrageous suggestion: the two of you get married!!! She says that the conservative judge would be more willing to hand the children over to a "normal American family" if the guardians were a legally married couple.

You and Charlie look at each other. You both love the kids and don't want to lose them. What choice do you have? You quickly make plans for the most convincing wedding.

Once you and Charlie are legally married, the judge finally deems you both fit to be the guardians of Silas and Eden. The kids are thrilled to be living with you without the fear of being sent away to the grandmother they barely know or into foster care. They are also given their own permanent bedrooms, which they design to their liking. Your husband also adds a playroom for them.

The kids are happy at home and are due to start school in the fall. You and Charlie agree that this is to be a marriage in name only...or is it?
