Christian Occupation Names

Inspired by Reese Witherspoon's son Deacon Reese Philippe and my personal love of the name Shepherd "Shep", here's a list of names having to do with occupations in any Christian church. Not all are considered occupations, as in job professions, but all are nouns describing something related to Christianity.
  1. Abbot
    • Abbess
      • Almoner
        • Apostle
          • Bishop
            • Origin:

              English occupational name
            • Description:

Reese Witherspoon's Deacon has opened this churchy direction for occupational names. It reentered the US Top 1000 in 2015.
          • Baptizer
            • Beadle
              • Beadsman
                • Bedesman
                  • Brother
                    • Canon
                      • Origin:

                        English
                      • Meaning:

                        "clergyman, law, oeuvre"
                      • Description:

A variant of the surname Cannon, or an English word name with several possible meanings. A canon is a clergyman, as well as a rule or law – especially within religious doctrine. In the arts, canon is also the name of the whole oeuvre or work of a particular writer or creator.
                    • Chancellor
                      • Origin:

                        English
                      • Meaning:

                        "chief secretary"
                      • Description:

Of the names derived from titles, this is one of the least obvious (unless you are of German extraction). Chancellor also has the attraction of offering the exciting - and very on-trend - nickname Chance.
                    • Chaplain
                      • Cardinal
                        • Chorbishop
                          • Churchwarden
                            • Deacon
                              • Origin:

                                Greek
                              • Meaning:

                                "messenger, servant"
                              • Description:

This name was transposed from the word for a church officer to a baby name when Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe chose it for their son, after a baseball player ancestor, and Don Johnson followed suit. Its popularity also got a boost from Nashville character Deacon Claybourne -- only to fall a bit in recent years.
                            • Dean
                              • Origin:

                                English
                              • Meaning:

                                "church official"
                              • Description:

Dean may sound to some like a retro surfer boy name, but it is once again climbing up the popularity chart in the USA. For decades it was associated with Dean (born Dino) Martin; more recent representatives include Dean Cain, Dean McDermott and Dean Koontz -- not to mention Jared Padalecki's dreamy Dean Forester in Gilmore Girls.
                            • Diakonissa
                              • Disciple
