French Names

I have been really crushing on French names recently. Here's a few
  1. Adrienne
    • Origin:

      Latin, feminine variation of Adrian
    • Meaning:

      "man from Adria"
    • Description:

A long-integrated French feminine form of Adrian, now overshadowed by the a-ending version, but still a valid option, with considerable substance and dignity—though these days more parents would probably choose Adriana.
  2. Albertine
    • Origin:

      French feminine variation of Albert
    • Description:

Albertine and Alberta are old-fashioned feminizations ala Geraldine and Roberta. This is the kind of name that sounds very dowdy until a hip celebrity chooses it, at which point we don't know how we missed its coolness all this time.
  3. Alix
    • Origin:

      French
    • Meaning:

      "noble type"
    • Description:

A chic and sassy French choice, popular in France but likely to be confused with the more prosaic Alex in English-speaking countries. Although sometimes used in the US as a variant spelling of Alex, the French name Alix actually derives from a medieval French form of the name Alice or Adelaide.
  4. Alphonse
    • Origin:

      French from German
    • Meaning:

      "noble, ready for battle"
    • Description:

Rarely used, and for good reason. Alonzo is a preferable choice.
  5. Amable
    • Amelie
      • Origin:

        French variation of Amelia
      • Meaning:

        "work"
      • Description:

Emily gets a Bohemian spin and a French accent when it becomes Amelie. This favorite among French girl names has been gaining notice here thanks to the charming 2001 French film Amelie; it entered the American popularity list in 2002 and is now solidly established in the Top 1000.
    • Angeline
      • Origin:

        French variation of Angela
      • Meaning:

        "angel"
      • Description:

With Angelina becoming so popular thanks to Ms. Jolie, this could be a new twist—but everyone will always misunderstand it as Angelina. While it currently ranks at Number 951 in the US, it's Number 352 in France.
    • Angelique
      • Origin:

        French diminutive of Angela
      • Meaning:

        "angelic"
      • Description:

Angelique was the fastest-rising girl name of 2021, influenced by French-Mexican actress Angelique Boyer, who starred in the telenovela Imperio de mentiras (Empire of Lies).
    • Anouk
      • Origin:

Dutch and French variation of Anna
      • Meaning:

        "grace"
      • Description:

Anouk, made famous by French actress Anouk Aimée, is a singular name with a lovely sound and a Bohemian feel. Anouk Aimée was born as Francoise, but adopted the first name of the character she played in her debut film.
    • Antoinette
      • Origin:

French feminine diminutive form of Antoine
      • Meaning:

        "priceless one"
      • Description:

This feminization of Anthony, like other early French forms, such as Babette and Nanette, is not heard as often as it once was, but it could be time for a reappraisal of this delicate Gallic choice.
    • Arianne
      • Origin:

        French, from Latin Ariadne
      • Meaning:

        "very holy one"
      • Description:

Soft and delicate French name rarely heard here.
    • Arielle
      • Origin:

        French variation of Ariel
      • Meaning:

        "lion of God"
      • Description:

While not as popular as the Ariel spelling of Little Mermaid fame, this rendition has achieved popularity in its own right.
    • Auguste
      • Origin:

        French form of Latin Augustus
      • Meaning:

        "great, magnificent"
      • Description:

French version of August, for both sexes. And for those who feel the spelling of August is too plain.
    • Aurore
      • Avril
        • Origin:

          French variation of April

French Canadian pop star Avril Lavigne has put the spotlight on her name.
      • Axelle
        • Origin:

          French feminine form of Axel
        • Meaning:

          "father of peace"
        • Description:

Putting the emphasis on the "elle" softens a name that seems at once futuristic and medieval.
      • Appolline
        • Augustine
          • Babette
            • Origin:

              French, diminutive of Barbara
            • Description:

A less common relic of the Claudette-Paulette-Annette era.
          • Bastien
            • Origin:

French and Spanish, diminutive of Sebastien
            • Meaning:

"person from ancient city of Sebastia"
            • Description:

In this form, or as Sebastian or as Bas, Bastien is a fashionable Euro name with a possible future in America.
