Alice is a classic literary name that's both strong and sweet, ranking in the US Top 100 and popular throughout the western world. Alice is derived from the Old French name Aalis, a diminutive of Adelais that itself came from the Germanic name Adalhaidis, which is composed of the Proto-Germanic elements aþala, meaning "noble," and haidu, "kind, appearance, type."

Pride and Prejudice's Elizabeth Bennett was often called Eliza; in Harriet Beecher Stowe's anti-slavery novel Uncle Tom's Cabin, Eliza is the intelligent and courageous protagonist

 One note: Do not name sisters Eliza and Isabel or Isabella, as they're different forms of mother name Elizabeth.

Well balanced between sleek, sweet, strong, and vintage, newly chic Eloise re-entered the US Top 1000 in 2009, following a 50 year absence. In 2022, it broke into the Top 100 in the US and across the pond in the UK. Given to nearly 3000 babies each year, Eloise is showing no sign of stepping out of the spotlight. 
 
Eloise comes from the Old French name, Héloïse, which means "healthy" and "wide." The name was first used by Héloïse, a 12th century scholar, philosopher and Catholic Abbess whose work inspired a many French and English writers.
 There is contention over whether her name is a feminized variant of Eloi, meaning "to choose" or a French form of the Old German Helewidis meaning "healthy" and "wood" or "wise".
 
Eloise has also been linked to the name Louise, but despite their similarities, there is no evidence either derived from the other. But don't let that stop you from using Eloise as an updated honor for a family Louisa!
 
However it originally came to be, the name was revived in the 19th century as Eloise, making the pronunciation more obvious to English speakers and the spelling more in line with the familiar Eleanor and Eliza. 
 
To some, Eloise will forever be the imperious little girl making mischief at the Plaza Hotel, while others might think of the rebellious Eloise from the TV series Bridgerton - a popular show which first aired in 2020, and likely influenced the rise of Eloise.

Evelyn derives from the French feminine given name Aveline, which is from an obscure Germanic root which may mean "desired, wished for" or "water, island". Its quiet persona was reversed with the character Evelyn Salt, played by Angelina Jolie. Bruce Willis chose it for his fifth daughter and Carey Mulligan used it for hers.

Sweet and stylish, with a sporty, energetic undertone, Everly is a name that ticks lots of boxes. 
It’s a contemporary choice that doesn’t sound invented; it’s got unisex appeal but still sounds girly; it’s got nickname potential and a popular initial; it’s reminiscent enough of Emily and Evelyn, of Beverley and Ashley, that despite its modern usage, it shouldn’t raise too many eyebrows when you announce it. 
Unsurprisingly then, Everly is given to around 4000 girls every year and ranks in the US Top 100, not once, but twice, albeit with the alternative spelling, Everleigh. 
The name is derived from Old English roots, from a surname that was also a place name. It means “wild boar in a woodland clearing”, and is related to another popular choice, Everett, which means “brave as a wild boar.” Boars were once associated with strength and power and an honor to be named for. 
While this meaning lends Everly a hint of adventure and toughness, there is the possibility to play around with it a bit, if you want to push boundaries. Breaking it down into the words “Ever” and “ley” – which means clearing, meadow or woodland – you could stretch it to mean “eternal meadow” or “eternal woods.” 
Part Eva, part Emily, part Avery, Everly was once tied tothe Everly Brothers, a musical duo popular in the 50’s and 60’s. 
Now, however, it is more likely to be associated with Everleigh Labrant, of YouTube fame, and as a celebrity-style choice, with actors Channing and Jenna Tatum, and TV personalities Chad and Erin Paine choosing it for their daughters. 
In fact, Channing and Jenna Tatum’s use of Everly in 2013 propelled it from a rarity to the Top 200. Popular now in Canada and rising in the UK, Everly has been in the US Top 100 since 2017. 
Stylish, contemporary, and familiar, Everly is sparkly but with an edginess to it. One possible drawback to Everly, however, is that while it doesn’t rank as highly as the likes of Olivia or Emma, when you combine all the spelling variations, there are nearly 8000 girls given the name every year in the US. 
This could make it feel like a Top 20 name, ranking somewhere between Harper, Sofia, and Luna. If do you enjoy Everly then, but want something a little different, Ember, Waverly, Connelly, or simply Ever, could be alternative options.

Felicity is as accessible a virtue name as Hope and Faith, but much more feminine -- and dare we say, happier. The hit TV show did a lot to soften and modernize the once buttoned-up image of Felicity, and it got further notice as the red-haired Colonial doll, Felicity Merriman, in the American Girl series. A current bearer is actress Felicity Huffman.

Magnolia, a sweet-smelling Southern belle of a name made famous via the iconic Edna Ferber novel and musical Showboat, is one of the latest wave of botanical names, along with unexpected blossoms Azalea and Zinnia. It is named for French botanist Pierre Magnol.
 Magnolia has been chosen for his daughter by Adrian Young of No Doubt—which happens to be a fabulous baby-naming consortium as well as a great musical group.
 In Showboat, the Magnolia character goes by nicknames Noa, Nollie, and Maggie.
 Magnolia charted on the popularity list almost every year from 1880 to 1940, topping at Number 420 in 1909—but it's now making a comeback.
 Magnolia Breeland is a character on the TV show Hart of Dixie, who happens to have a sister named Lemon and a father named Brick.

Matilda is a sweet vintage name that has been gently climbing the popularity list for the past 15 years, after a half-century slumber. The spunky children's book heroine Matilda is one factor in its rise, along with others of its class like Eloise and Caspian.

The comeback of this sweet vintage name, one of the most stylish girls' names starting with M, has been prompted by a boomlet of starbaby Matildas, beginning with chef Gordon Ramsey's in 2002 and Moon Unit Zappa's two years later. But the renaissance of this name of the charming Roald Dahl heroine was assured when Michelle Williams and the late Heath Ledger chose Matilda for their daughter. 
 Matilda was introduced to the English-speaking world by the eleventh century Matilda of Flanders, queen of William the Conqueror, then used for his granddaughter, known as Maud. In literature, Matilda appeared in Dickens's Nicholas Nickleby.
<p.>Trivia tidbit: The Matilda in the Australian song 'Waltzing Matilda' refers not to a person but to the knapsacks that swing, or waltz, on the backs of itinerant laborers as they walk along.

In Greek mythology, Penelope was the wife of Odysseus in Homer’s Odyssey. The violet is a delicate, sweet-smelling spring flower, associated with faithfulness and modesty, and also the seventh color of the rainbow, named after the flower’s vivid purple hue. 
Today, Violet is the top flower name for girls, outranking Lily and Iris in the Top 100, and the second most popular color name for girls after Scarlett. 
A name that dozed quietly for decades, Violet was popular a hundred years ago, then began its steep descent, bottoming out in the early 1980s. But it started rising again in the late 1990s and climbed even more sharply after Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck chose it for their daughter in 2005.
