    For boys we have
Ned - great nn for Edward
Alfie - like this as a nn for Alfred
Joe - great nn for Joseph
    Louis/Lewis - either are great
Hugo - so cute but trendy with the Hipsters
William - classic, one of my favorites
    Noah - love
Jacob - love, but this is so popular. Still if you love it, you gotta use it.
Ben - great nn for Benjamin
Nate - do not like (the word nates means buttocks.)
    Carter - it's okay
Fred - great nn for Frederick
we like the name Kirk as a second name, but aren't set on it

    For girls we have
Abby - Abigail and Abby are so popular
    Ava - so popular
Josie - love as a nn for Josephine
Poppy - very cute, could be a nn for Penelope
Tilly - love this so much as a nn for Matilda

I think it's important to give a baby a formal name because there are many formal occasions in life. Plus it gives them more choices of what to be called.

Ned - sweet; may be easily rhymmed in gradeschool
Alfie - I love this name, very British
Joe - good, solid, classic name
    Louis/Lewis - another classic
Hugo - I like this name in theory, but have never personally seen it attached to a child
William - one of my favorites! So classic with abundent nickname potential
Noah - I like Noah, but it seems to be pretty popular right now, if that is a consideration
    Jacob - Great name
    Ben - Love Ben(jamin)
Nate - I like Nate, and Nat, for a Nathan or Nathaniel
Carter - not in love with Carter
Fred - I like Fred, but it too has the same rhymming possibilities

Abby - beautiful name, but very popular right now. I know three infant Abbys
Ava - another beautiful choice; also popular
Josie - not in love with Josie
    Poppy - very cute name
Tilly - I love Tilly (or Tillie). I think Tillie is a great way to soften a classic like Matilda

    Re: 4wks to go....still confused

Hi there! Congrats! Many of your selected names seem like nicknames to me, were you planning on naming the baby a longer name and calling him or her the shorter version? Or were you planning on just naming him or her the name below as a full name?

As someone with a very short name and no nickname potential, I would highly recommend naming your baby the longer, more full name so he/she has the option of using that for formal or professional purposes later in life.

    BOYS
Ned just okay for me, I like others better but I do like Susan's suggestion of Edward for the longer name. Then he could be Ned or Eddie (which is also very cute!)

Alfie Love this if you use the full name of Alfred and call him Alfie, very cute but it can grow with him into adulthood with the full name

Joe Joesph? Josiah? nn Joey? All great options

Louis/Lewis I Love both Louis (pronounced Louie) and Lewis. Both are adorable!

Hugo Love Hugo too! There was another post about Hugo a few weeks ago and I also stuck up for him then! Adorable, strong yet sweet, not terribly common but totally approachable. Adorable!

William Good solid name. Tough to go wrong here.

Noah Not my favorite for some reason, but a nice name also

Jacob has been #1 I think for a while, just a consideration.

Ben Benjamin? Very nice, strong, classic.

Nate Nathan? Cute, fairly common but still a great choice

Carter slightly trendy, but I still like it. It doesn't have the classicness of your other choices

Fred Frederick is a GREAT name and I think underused lately. Very handsome!

Kirk as a middle would go great with some but not all of these choices. Lets pick the firsts you love and then search for middles because right now there are SO many combinations!

    Other firsts to consider:
    Micah
    Archer/Archibald nn Archie
    Ethan
    Owen
    Oliver
    George
    Lucas nn Luke
    Isaac
    Sebastian
    Vance
    Barrett
    Norman
    Clayton nn Clay
    Dominic
    Victor
    Bernard
    Wade
    Warren

    For girls we have
Abby Abigail is beautiful, strong, and smart and Abby gives her the option of a cute and fun nickname!

Ava VERY popular (#4) she likely would have many other Avas in her class. Too bad though because I also love this name and hadn't realized its recent popularity.

Josie I love Josephine or Josephina, as Jocelyn is a great option to nn Josie

Poppy Cute but DEFINITELY needs a longer name to give her the option when she's older (ie: she is CEO of a company named Poppy? Probably would like Patricia or another longer name to fall back on) Here are some options: Primrose, Priscilla, Pomona, Philippa (also nn Pippa), Petra, Paulina, Paloma, Pamela, Padma

Tilly Cute nickname for Talia or Altamira, I am sure others can come up with more!

    A few more:
Eve or even Evelyn nn Eve
    Taryn
    Lillian
    Georgina (Georgie)
    Amalie
    Amy
    Chloe
    Alden
    Hannah
    Elsa nn Elsie
    Eloise
    Angelica
    Lacey
    Alexa

    For boys we have
Ned - too short....needs something more official
    Alfie - sounds like a dog's name
    Joe - too plain
Louis/Lewis - eh, kinda geeky, but on the right kid it could be cute
Hugo - is a hurricane to me
    William - nice and plain
    Noah - ok
    Jacob - common
    Ben - plain
Nate - getting to be popular
    Carter - nice
    Fred - nope
we like the name Kirk as a second name, but aren't set on it --- I like Kirk as a first name better than any others on your list.

    For girls we have
    Abby - ubber common
    Ava - ditto
    Josie - short for ?
    Poppy - eh
    Tilly - short for??

I have to say Hayeser, that was not very constructive. Your screen name makes me a little curious about you. Is Hayeser supposed to mean Hazer?

    What's Hazer?
I agree, that post seemed pretty negative and unresearched.

Ned: I LOVE Ned as a nickname for Nathan, Nathaniel, and Edward.

Alfie: Darling, as is the longer Alfred.

    Joe: I LOVE Joseph!

Louis/Lewis: I prefer many of your other names..

    Hugo: I really like Hugo!

    William: One of my favorites...

    Noah: A great name...

Jacob: Too popular for me...What about Ezra, Gabriel, or Gideon?

Ben: Benjamin is one of my favorites!

Nate: I adore Nathaniel and Nathan!

Carter: Carter is too trendy for my taste, but I suppose it would make a nice middle name.

Fred: Frederick is a great choice....

we like the name Kirk as a second name, but aren't set on it: I'm not a fan of Kirk, but that's just me! :-)

    For girls we have
Abby: Abigail is quite popular, but it's a lovely name!

    Ava: Waaayy too popular!

    Josie: LOVE Josephine!

    Poppy: Penelope is great!

    Tilly: LOVE Matilda!

As others already mentioned, you've listed a lot of fantastic nicknames, but they aren't substantial enough for a first name. By using the full names (which still give you the nicknames), you've got the best of both worlds!
