    Help with Elle / Ella

We are in the third trimester (woohoo homestretch!) and we aren’t “settled” on our baby name...Ahhh! Our previous children were not remotely this hard to name! Naming is so much more stressful this time around!

    Our two children are:
    Lauren & Jacob (Jake)

We also have an Audrey Marie that we lost to miscarriage.

This baby is a girl and the name that my husband and I have battled it out on because I feel like it’s “her name” is simple, elegantly understated Elle. Preferably Elle Caroline. I love it so. much. I have loved the name Elle since we had our son, who is now 8 lol. So it’s not like a passing fad to me. My husbands pick is Grace. I don’t hate Grace, but it’s not as exciting to me. His issue is that he feels like Elle isn’t a complete name, and it’s like naming our kid the letter L. He doesn’t “get” the name or the appeal. He agreed to compromise and name the baby Ella because he feels like it’s more formal and I can use Elle as a nickname. I think Elle is actually a more mature name than Ella for a grown woman. Another option I suggested that he’s not sold on is to name the baby Elisabeth and call her Elle. This is a family name on my side, and also my daughter Lauren’s middle name (hence the issue with using Elisabeth).

Thoughts? Suggestions? Does Ella nn Elle work?

Ella nn Elle definitely works, although I’m on your side in that I prefer the simple, elegant Elle. Elle Caroline is gorgeous. It sounds like the compromise is going to be your best bet though so Ella nn Elle seems like it may be your best bet.

I think kids deserve their own names though so I’d advise against using Elisabeth again.

Are you open to other full names for Elle? There’s loads—honestly anything that starts with El-, includes -el-, or even starts with L could work

Ok this makes me feel so much better..I worry that Ella nn Elle wouldn’t work, it’s reassuring to hear it does lol!

I do agree that kids should have their own name. I’m just desperate to use Elle so I’ve tried every trick in the book with my husband to get him to budge lol! Including most of the other suggested names, all except Ella have been a “no”. I would say he is more picky than i am about names, but in his defense his big thing is that 1. We are naming future grown adults and 2. He wants them to have names he feels that they can be proud of and do anything with. We’re on the same page with that.

I think Elle is cute on its own and because it’s a more popular name I don’t think people think of it as incomplete. Suggestions for longer names...

I much prefer Elle as a full name - it feels complete and sophisticated but also cute.
Ella is nice enough too though and Elle works as a nickname

I prefer the sleek, sophisticated Elle over Ella as Ella seems so overused. If necessary, I second the suggestions of pp’s of using a name where you can get the nickname Elle although I would maybe avoid Ella as it is much more familiar to people than Elle, and people may call her that rather than Elle. There are so many nice suggestions of names that would work just depending of what you like.

I do prefer Ella to Elle myself, but that being said, Elle works just fine as a nn for Ella.
