Would like to know what you think of the last name Major...

What are your thoughts on the last name "Major"? is it uncommon? basic? what do you think its origin is? if you can even answer this, what last name is it comparable to ex. Smith. I know it doesn't really make a difference but we have a first name in mind that rhymes with it.

As a last name, I'm perfectly fine with it. It seems uncommon, as I've never met someone personally with the last name, but I also wouldn't be surprised if I heard it over a school intercom somewhere.

I dont think I've met anyone with the surname, but it doesnt feel unfamiliar. I'd assume it was English in origin

Where I live Major is a fairly rare surname but it's not unheard-of.

John Major was Prime Minister of Britain in the 1990s so I would assume that it's of English origin.
