why some place names and not others?

Why Bristol and Harlow but not Gillingham or Hastings?
    Why Devon not Dorset?
And why has Miami never taken off but other US place names are popular?
What do you think makes one place name work and not another.

People tend to like/be more comfortable with things that are familiar. So since many people have known or met an Adelaide or Georgia or London or whatever, it seems normal and usable. Madrid or Kiev or Taiwan, not so much. I have a lot of random place names on my guilty pleasures list though- Amalfi, Dubrovnik, Malta, Andorra, Swansea, Puglia...

Some place-names scream place louder than others.
