    My brothers name is Lukas and my mother always calls him Luke but the rest of the family and friends call him Luki (in German pronounced Lukee).
    I guess it always depends on the country you live in. In Austria probably everybody would assume that Luke is short for Lukas/Lucas while I think in the US Luke is more commonly known as a full name instead of just a nickname.

    I agree. If I knew the parents well enough, I might ask if Luke was short for Lucas but I wouldn't just assume it.

    I have a cousin named Jake and people sometimes assume he is a Jacob which he isnt, but I think Luke is a more widely acceptable standalone first name
