Many namers desire different qualities in their girls' names than their boys', which may account for this difference. I'd suggest choosing names that are somewhat close in contemporary usage, even though one might seem more traditional than the other. Walter and Itzel, as a left field example, evoke radically different imagery even though they'll be heard on the playground with about the same frequency. Jacob and Philomena, by contrast, would be more jarring.
