    Gone to the girls?

    Hi Everyone,

For the LONGEST time I have absolutely loved the name Tristan. A few years ago I was talking to someone about it and they wrinkled their nose and told me that Tristan was a girls name! I didn't really agree but it kind of turned me off the name. I hate when really great boy names go to the girls! Recently I re-read Tristan and Isolde and fell in love all over again. Tristan to me is so masculine! I think of someone who is strong, dark and handsome. The other thing is that I have never actually met a female Tristan. So my question is....has Tristan gone to the girls or do you still find it handsome and have you ever met a girl Tristan? Thanks!

I've never met or heard of a girl named Tristan. This is very much a boy's name to me. I know 2 little Tristan, both boys, obviously.

The person who informed you that Tristan was a GIRLS name made a grave error. While a few parents have named their daughter's Tristan over the years (probably spelled with a random y), Tristan was No# 89 most popular BOYS name in the US last year (that's 4,390 boys) and has been in the top 100 for BOYS since 2006. I don't know what your friend was thinking but he or she obviously isn't aware of naming trends. I wouldn't worry about it too much.I think it's very romantic and handsome.
    All the best,

I've met one female Tristan, but her sister had a masculine name as well, so I expect her parents were intentionally going for a boyish theme with their names. As for the people who gave those opinions, they were probably thinking along the lines of "it sounds like Kristen/Kristin, so it must be a girls' name." Perhaps they even misheard you?
