    Why art thou male, Cymbeline?

What do you think, does this name sound masculine?

It is a masculine name for me, but it does have a slightly feminine sound to it.

I wouldn't say comes across as particularly masculine - it has the 'y' that seems to be considered feminine now (probably because we unfortunately see stuck in so many "feminized" versions of boys names these days e.g. Ashtyn, Emersyn, Jaydyn ... *shudders*), the 'line' ending of so many popular girls names (e.g. Madeline, Adeline, Emmeline) and it also has 'bel' in it.

I think you could get away with using it for a girl if you wanted to, as long as you were willing to put up with the occasional, "oh, like the Shakespearean king?".

It's a weird Shakespeare-ization of an ancient British king's name, which comes out more like Cunobelinus in Romano-British style, or Cynfelyn in Welsh. Names often get mangled when coming from one language to the next.

There's always Augustine, to use as a comparison.

Cymbeline? Masculine? Not even a little, IMO.

Yes, I know, the character is male, but how many people are really going to care? I think it makes a much better name for a girl, personally. If I was a boy, I'd hate to be named Cymbeline.

    currently considering:
Martin, Shepherd, Edmond, Teagan, Winston, Absalom
a girl would have been named:
    Beatrix Judith
