    Thanks for all the suggestions! I do really like the name Samir but have some unfortunate associations with a person so that is sadly out. I think I like Samford and Sambell best. And I can't believe I forgot Samwise, haha.

    @catheyc - thanks for sharing the story of your son, it certainly is funny how that works sometimes.

    Samwell is a character from 'A Song of Ice and Fire'. He usually goes by Sam.

    I went to college with a Samir my freshman year. I didn't really know him, but he seemed like a nice guy. He was Egyptian, though, and it seems like one of those names that you couldn't really pull off if you weren't Egyptian. I really don't know the Game of Thrones/A Song of Ice and Fire series, but I do think Samwell nn Sam is cool. It sort of reminds me of a masculine take on Samuella (sam-WELL-ah), without the Samuel spelling.

    The only other way to get Sam that I've thought of is by initials. I had liked Seth August Morgan, nn Sam, a while ago. I just don't think I could commit to the initials nn idea...
