Christmas Names: From Anya Claus to Zuzu Bailey

Looking for Christmas names for your holiday-season babe? Well, you can forget about those old chestnut choices like Noel/Noelle, Holly, Natalie, Eve, Merry, Carol and Claus. A much more original idea might be to look at some of the classic and current Christmas movies for interesting character names that would do the job more subtly. But don’t worry– we’re not suggesting Ebenezer or Clarence.

Anya

Picture 2 of 12

In 1985's "Santa Claus," starring Dudley Moore, Mrs. Claus’s first name was Anya. This Russian pet form of Anna instantly turns the blander Ann and Anna exotic. It was also Audrey Hepburn’s name in Roman Holiday, and played a role in Buffy, the Vampire Slayer.

I’d love to see Frederica make a comeback for girls too 🙂 and Natalie.

Dudley may be a Harry Potter name, but Dudley is not really a likeable character. It’s also my first association with the name…so…not attractive. It does rhyme with cuddly, though. I guess it has that going for it…

I would end up shortening Dudley to dud though… Not a very uplifting nickname. Love Anya though.

I noticed Augustus and all I can think off is the Ompa Loompas singing Augustus Gloop, Augustus Gloop. After he went up the pipe. Not a good namesake

Zuzu only makes me think of Zhu Zhu Pets.

Jefferson would fit right in with the current “son” trend though.

Audrey, Anya, Miles, and Frederick are my favorites from this article.

Recent article about the sad life of Zuzu leaves me with no longer thinking this is a viable option. Since I have a niece named Susie, somehow I don’t think this is the lame nn that other berries do — her name is Susannah, nn Susie. The names in “Miracle on 34th Street” are good ones too — who can forget Tommy, the son of the prosecutor? And Kris in all its variations for Kris Kringle. Other films with great Christmas scenes and interesting names include “I Remember Mama” and “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn.”

I think the story of the actress that played Zuzu is one of strength and perserverence. Though I do like the nickname Suzy better. Agreed that Augustus always brings to mind Ooompa Loompas and Dudley is not likable in Harry Potter and definitely the first Dudley I think of (followed by Dudley Doright). Audrey is pretty, but I prefer Aubrey. I would like to meet a little Anya, Miles, or Jefferson. I’m glad we all have differing opinions so this world has variety.
