Cancer Baby Names
By E. Wittig
Crabs are sensitive, loyal homebodies and imaginative dreamers, inspiring a plethora of baby name ideas. They are ruled by the moon and the element of water. Blue-green, silver, and white are the sign’s colors, and rubies and pearls are its gems, all of which serve as inspiration for names for Cancer babies.
Cora – The crab is the second of three water signs. For names with an aquatic etymology, consider Welsh Morgana and Morwenna, Scottish Cora, and Finnish name Meri. The Arabic Nahla means “a drink of water.” Talia is Hebrew for “dew from heaven.” Cordelia, Araxie, Caspian, Atlantis, Delmare, and Adrienne are a few more water-related choices.
Ethan – Strong-willed Cancers exhibit unwavering loyalty and faithfulness to their loved ones. Names that reflect these qualities include Fidel, Truman, Ethan, Berk, and Iman. For a more literal take, try word names True, Steadfast, Constant, Loyal, and Faith.
Harrison – Lunar exploration offers many choices to science-lovers looking for names in the early summer months. NASA’s Project Apollo resulted in a number of astronauts walking the moon. In addition to the famous Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, less conspicuous scientists include Alan Shepard, Harrison Schmitt, James Irwin, and Charles Duke.
Kasper – Cancer’s ruling planet is not in fact a planet, but a much closer celestial body – Earth’s own moon. Sometimes called Luna, our moon hosts features such as Rimae Römer, Rima Marcello, and Dorsum Thera, and craters Ellison, Kasper, Arago, Bowen, Ravi, and Finsch.
Lucine – The Turkish Aysun means “as beautiful as the moon” and Hala is Arabic for “halo around the moon.” Moon names from other cultures include Chandra, Lucine, Mahsa, and Indu. The Israeli city Jericho may derive from the name of a Canaanite moon god. Finally, consider Turkish name Koray, “ember moon,” and the haunting Persian name Mahpari, meaning “moon fairy.”
Morrigan – Many branches of Neo-Paganism are heavily influenced by the moon and its phases. The Maiden, Mother, and Crone are three faces of one deity, represented by the waxing, full, and waning moon. In Gaelic myth, they are called the Morrigan. Various incarnations of this triple goddess are Brigid, Kore, and Phoebe as Maiden; Hera, Selene and Macha as Mother; and Hecate, Ceridwen, and Hella as Crone. Some other moon deities are Elatha and Máni – an Irish and Norse god – and goddesses Mama Quilla and Arianrhod.
Ruby– Ruby is the Crab’s most recognized gemstone. A rare and valuable stone, rubies signify passion and warmth. In contrast to the ruby’s rich red color, the muted blue-green shades of the sea and the pale ones of the moon reflect the Cancer personality. Aqua, Turquoise, Teal, and Bondi are sea-colored names; moony ones include shades Alabaster, Daisy, and Pearl.
Samson – The months of Cancer are June and July, derived from Juno and Julius. For those who prefer more modern-sounding names, try Julius’ forms Julio, Jules, and Juliette. Though Cancer is ruled by the moon, the season also symbolically ties it to the sun. Cancer begins on the summer solstice, the first day of summer and longest day of the year. Along with sunny names like Soleil and Samson, both Summer and Solstice are fitting names for a Crab.
Sebastian– Pop culture’s most recognized crab is none other than The Little Mermaid’s dignified composer Sebastian; any list of crabs would not be complete without him. The character’s full name has a rich supply of sophisticated middle names: Horatio Thelonious Ignatius Crustaceous Sebastian. Less well-known are a pair of crabs in the Pixar film Finding Nemo, given the names Bernie and Baz.
Sertan – Of all twelve zodiac constellations, Cancer is the hardest to see. Sertan, Asellus Borealis, Asellus Australis, Tegmine, and Nahn are the uniquely named stars. Cancer’s vivid star cluster Praesepe, which means “hive” or “manger,” contains over a thousand stars and is the brightest part of the constellation. In ancient times, the Beehive Cluster was called Achlus, “little mist” and Nephelion, “little cloud.”

Unless astrology has changed recently, Cancer is the fourth sequential sign & first water sign: 1) Aries (fire); 2) Taurus (earth); 3) Gemini (air); 4) Cancer (water). Pisces is the 12th & last sign, not the first.
Other Cancer-related names might be Océane, Marine/Marina, Waverley, Sandra/Sandrine, Aphrodite, Darya/Derya/Deniz, Dylan, Ione, Kai, Llyr, Maris/Marisol, Meredith, Naia, & Nerissa.
