Penny Origin and Meaning

The name Penny is a girl's name of English origin.

Like Peggy and Patsy, the kind of zesty moniker young Judy Garland would sport in her early let's-put-on-a-show flicks. It fell out of favor (and the Top 1000) for a while, but has recently rebounded by reentering the charts in 2013. Expect it to continue gaining traction as a result of surprise hit Penelope.

I keep hearing people talking about alternative nicknames for Penelope, to avoid using Penny. That's fine, but personally, I love Penny, as either a nickname, or an independent name.

Wittyusername103 Says:

Penny is just that simple style of beautiful names either have or don't. Penelope and Priscilla are just too "try-hard" but Penny is so simple but still so lovely.

LavenderLullabies Says:

I like both Penny and Penelope, but I actually prefer Penny as a stand alone name. It's got a nice, southern charm and sounds very happy to me.

Lola Says:

I agree! Penelope is my sisters name & she goes by Penny. Everyone seems to adore Penny/Penelope, and her name! I got stuck with the name Lauren (not sure what my parents were thinking when they named us) I hate my name. It's so common now, & there's SO MANY people I went to school with named Lauren. In 10th grade there were TEN girls in my class named Lauren! TEN! It sux. Big Time. :(

I love it!!! Of all the nickname names, besides Beth, I just love Penny. Eli and Penny. But I would put Penelope as her full name, as I absolutely adore Penelope. I don't know anymore when it comes girl names. I will know in 3 weeks if I am having a girl or a boy. I already have a handsome name picked out for a boy. His name will be Calvin Jacob, but a girl? There are just so many beautiful choices.

I like it as a full name. I must admit. Maybe it's just a guilty pleasure. I despise the name Penelope. Maybe it sounds fancy to some, but in my area I here it all the time and I'm bored of it.

SunKissedChild Says:

My grandparents always say that they're going "to spend a penny" when they need to use the toilet. It's an old phrase from when they had to pay a penny to use public toilets. So the name Penny makes me think of toilets and it may be the same with others.
I do love the name Penelope though.

CocoWhite Says:

I think this name is adorable! I don't understand why people shy away from it so much.

Sweekune Says:

A delightful and fresh nickname experiencing a revival. I would love to use this but possibly as a nickname for another name.
