Gender: Female Origin of Luca: Italian variation of Luke

Luca Origin and Meaning

The name Luca is a girl's name of Italian, Slavic origin.

Very much a boy's name in Italy, it's beginning to be seen as a unisex possibility here: actress Jennie Garth used it for her daughter. Also spelled Lucca as in the Italian city, it can also be considered one of the place names along with Venezia, Roma, and Milana that make great Italian names for girls.

Names ending in “a” tend to sound feminine to me and Luca is no exception. I was surprised when I first learned it was boy’s name.

Not a name I’d pick for my daughter, but I love it for a girl.

CJ Says:

It sounds feminine to me.

Daiseymae Says:

I wholeheartedly agree with you.

indiefendi2 Says:

in Hungary, Luca is considered female and pronounced loot-sa so technically it is an exception in that way. But I agree about boy names on girls. 9/10 I really don't like it. Boys won't have any names left at this rate.

AldabellaxWulfe Says:

I don't like boy names on girls, and Luca is no exception. But I do find the feminine place name and surname, Lucania, a rather attractive alternative. Lucasta is also a pretty viable option.

ElenaCroatia Says:

In Croatian, it is spelled Luka and is 100% boys' name.

No way! So weird!

daisydoe Says:

I hate the fact that I get bothered by people saying this is an all boys name. In Hungary is 100% female and me being Hungarian I immediately think of a girl rather than a boy. Granted I would pronounce it as "LOO-tsah", but I think Nameberry should mention that Luca is the equivalent of the English name Lucy in Hungary and even in Croatian I believe.

Wittyusername103 Says:

I've actually met a girl Luca before.

RoddyThlayli Says:

Normally I'm against traditionally masculine names on girls (Alva, Akiva and Elijah makes me cringe), but recently Luca sounds unisex to me. It never used to. I think it's because I recently read Gregor the Overlander-- there's a character in it named Luxa.

indiefendi2 Says:

In Hungary this is in the Top 10 for girls......
it's their variation of Lucia or Lucy

laurashgre Says:

I'm guilty for favoring some unisex names, but after personally going to school and befriending a boy named Luca, i couldn't ever see it on a girl.

A lot of Americans can't seem to accept a boy's name ending with a unless it's Biblical like Joshua so they put especially Italian boy names on girls. There are girls out here named Giovanni. That's naming their daughter Jonathan.

roundtwobabygirl Says:

This is definitely a boys name. While I like Unisex names on kids, this isn't one of them.

Guest Says:

The supermodel Mariacarla Boscono has a daughter named Marialuca I love that combo.

Sweekune Says:

I'm sorry, but this is a boys name. I would hate to see Luca on a girl!
