  • Anime and Manga Names

Last Updated October 27, 2014 at 5:58 PM

Many jewels that could be worthy of a name of a Western baby can be found within the pages or episodes of Japanese manga and anime series. Here are a few worth considering. Many Western names often are used in manga/anime, and often provide great/evil namesakes for children.

  • Av- and Ev- Names: Putting a New Spin on Ava and Evelyn

Last Updated October 27, 2014 at 5:58 PM

Once upon a time, not so long ago, was a time when Ava was barely on the charts and Evelyn long gone from the top 100. Now, Top Ten Ava is a contender for the number one name of the year and Evelyn is sitting comfortably at 24. Unisex Avery is enjoying slot 18 as a girl's name that has more tomboyishness than Ava. Evie, diminuitive of Evelyn, is rising fast, and has hit the coveted top 10 in the UK. Once upon a time, Av- and Ev- names were considered rare, exotic jewels. As this trend sees no signs to slowing down, many are looking for alternatives to the uber popular names that fill up three slots on kindergarten rosters. Look no further. Av- and Ev- names without a mark on the top 100 still exist.

  • Beautiful but Rare Girl's names

Last Updated October 27, 2014 at 5:58 PM

All these names are above the rank 500. However, they deserve so much better! Ranks are shown next to the names. A girl born today with one of these names is most likely going to be the only Astrid, Mae or Evianna in her class, but most will be able to recognize and pronounce the name.

  • Girl Names Turned Boy

Last Updated October 27, 2014 at 5:58 PM

The latest trend these days is male names being given to girls- go to any playground and here girls responding to Addison, Avery, Ashley and Madison; and even look through birth announcements to see a girl named Bond or Elliot. But what about girl names turned male? For those who scoff at the idea, there are a few names out there that fit this description. If you name your daughter one of these, and if people critiscize you for choosing a 'male' name, you can unleash your inner name nerd.

  • Greek Myth Names: Beyond Athena and Orion (WIP)

Last Updated October 27, 2014 at 5:59 PM

If you are passionate about mythology or have Greek heritage, why settle for a well known name such as Persephone or Iris? These names are inexplicably tied with mythology, but the following are unusual names with a history spanning millennia. Goodbye, Apollo and Artemis, hello Elpis and Acheron. (I suggest looking up the pronunciation, but two important rules are that the 'e' at the end is always pronounced 'ee' and that the c makes a hard kuh sound like in car.)

  • Japanese Word Names

Last Updated October 27, 2014 at 5:58 PM

Word names are all the rage these days. But if you don't want your kid to be one of the many nouns in his/her classroom but like the meanings, looking to words in other languages might help. An exotic language such as Japanese can provide many alternatives to virtue and word names but mean the same thing. They also have the added value of Kanji script.

  • My List, My Style

Last Updated October 27, 2014 at 5:58 PM

A naming style, I believe, is what makes you like a name. Your guilty pleasures are often the best indicators of sound or meaning of your list. The best style I fall under is classic eccentric, or names that have historical value that are sometimes common (i.e. Lucy and Leo) to Nameberry favs (Mabel, Cordelia and Ariadne) to totally out of the box (Zebulon and Saskia). Here is my list of my current top names, names that aren't in my signature with notes. Note: Guilty Pleasures included and marked as such.

  • Pokemon Names

Last Updated October 27, 2014 at 5:58 PM

Ah, the guilty pleasure of half the population. Catching those little monsters has become a staple of many kids' childhoods. Now those kids are growing up, and having families of their own. If you liked Pokemon as a child, why not give him or her a name that relates to the game? There are beautiful and handsome names out there that aren't as obvious as Ash and Brock to name a Pokefan's kid. These are a list of names of Gym leaders, rivals, professors, evil dudes and such that aren't going to label you as a Pokemon fan. And believe it or not, these are actually some undiscovered jewels, or names past their prime that are up for a revival.

  • Rare Boys' Names with a Chance

Last Updated October 27, 2014 at 5:58 PM

Inspired by the Unusual Boys' Names: 14 Great Picks, I searched the SSA archives for names used for less than 50 baby boys and found some other, wonderful, and possibly more likely to come to fame picks.

  • Stripper Names

Last Updated October 27, 2014 at 5:58 PM

These are names to stay away from, unless you plan to enter your daughter in Toddlers or Tiaras or teach her how to pole dance. Names that end in 'ie' are a definite no-no when modified. Also, trashy misspellings abound.

  • Unusable Names

Last Updated October 27, 2014 at 5:58 PM

You obviously wouldn’t name your son Adolph, which once was a very respectable German name meaning ‘noble wolf’, but some names and name combos should be crossed off anyone’s list. Naming your daughter Zelda will not serve her well- the namesake of a kidnapped princess isn’t the best one out there. Knowing pop culture can serve you well. For example, a person was once asking about Nathaniel Drake, a fine and dandy boys’ name. That is, if you were naming him after the popular Uncharted video game series’ hero Nathan Drake. When considering a name, be careful to not unwittingly stroll into a trap where people asked you if your child was named after so-and-so. Here are some names that have been made unusable or on the border. Make sure you know most of the connections that a name (especially a name combo) has.

  • Yunike Names

Last Updated October 27, 2014 at 5:58 PM

Why do Isabella when you can do Izabelah? Sophia when you can do Sopheiah? These names are sure to tickle your fancy- if you can't spell, that is, or you want to be arrested for child abuse.
