Gone-Forever Names

<Note: I originally posted this in a different forum because I have the attention span of a gnat. I am posting it here where it belongs.>

Ten years ago I'd never have imagined I would love names like Edith and Evelyn; nor could I have imagined that Stella and Ruby would be so popular. We know that many names cycle back around, and in a couple of generations we might have a bumper crop of tiny Bills and Peggys. But what names out there do you predict will never come around again?

I'm thinking Gertrude, Geraldine and Irma. How about you?

Re: Gone-Forever Names

Bertha, easily. The Huge WW2 gun alone is enough to kill this name forever!

I hope Gertrude comes back! I think Gertie is cute! Think little Drew Barrymore in "ET" or little Raquel Castro as Gertie on "Jersey Girl" Yeah, Gertie's adorable, and Greta's sexy!

Re: Gone-Forever Names

All of the -oris names: Doris, Chloris, Morris, etc.

Re: Gone-Forever Names

Olive, your post made me laugh! :-) The -oris names are horrid, and my heart breaks for Cloris Leachman.

Hester, Beulah, Hortense, Myrtle

Cletus, Norbert, Horton, Buford

Re: Gone-Forever Names

Jill, I wouldn't cut Myrtle out too quickly. She's got that flower connection, and you never know, she might pull a Hazel! ;)

Others I'd add: Selma, Verna, Rhoda

Boys: Grover, Terry, Dwayne

Re: Gone-Forever Names

I seriously can't see Myrtle ever coming back, and if I ever see it, I'm going into hiding. Any name that rhymes with "girdle" I simply can't see regaining popularity. :-)

Grover totally reminds me of Kermit, which I hate, too.

I'm adding Ebenezer to this beautiful mix.

Re: Gone-Forever Names

Eunice
Martha
Dorcas
Brenda/Linda
Mildred
Hortense
Brunhilda

Wilbur
Hubert

Re: Gone-Forever Names

My grandfather always hated his name Wilbur-mostly because of Charlotte's Web-and hoped it would never come around to being popular again. Other, hopefully, dead names:

Hortense/Hortensia
Leroy
Archibald-the "bald" throws me off
Balthazar
Zebediah
Zebulon

Bertha-in agreement with everyone on that one!
Franny-love Frances but Franny makes me think of someones Fanny
Fanny-see above

Re: Gone-Forever Names

Gay/Gae/Gai...Definately don't think that could come back.

Re: Gone-Forever Names

Saw one last night I'd completely forgotten about (if you can believe it)! How's this one for "I doubt it'll ever come back": Hilda. Watched Time After Time" with Malcolm McDowell *swoon* (okay; I'm weird) last night, saw Hilda in the credits, twice!
