Not ditching Roslyn, but open to more suggestions. HELP!
by rkarczynski on Wed Oct 28, 2009 10:51 am
So hubby and I talked last night and we decided that we are going to keep our minds open to other names besides Roslyn/Rozlynn. We both agree that we still like the name, but don't love it as much as we do our DD's name Alanna. We may still use Roslyn, but want to keep our minds open in case we come across something else. So we have 7 weeks left until the c-section. If we don't come up with something that we BOTH agree on and love, then her name will be Roslyn (or Rozlynn). So, can I PLEASE once again get some help from my fellow posters?
The only criteria my husband has is that the name has a contemporary or modern feel - or can be altered to be modern (like changing the spelling of Roslyn to Rozlynn let him think it was modern). He has liked more popular or trendy names like Marissa and Anissa (but not Clarissa or Larissa), Summer (but not Summerlin), and Anastasia (my favorite from his list).
I have liked names like Cadence, Sienna, Seneca, Eliana, and Cailyn. I prefer them to be lower on the top 1000 list (preferably not in the top 100, though I might be able to live with something above 50 or 60). (That's partly why I liked Roslyn - it wasn't even on the 1000 list).
Here are the names we've agreed upon in the past - our first two boys were going to be named Cassandra and Alyssa if they were girls. And hubby wanted Alanna's name to be Leila. But we are not going to choose any of these 3 names - although we are both still quite fond of Cassandra, but have supersticions (forgive my spelling on that) against using it b/c our son (who would have been name Cassandra) passed away. His birthday was also on the 14th (July) - and there is a chance this baby will be born on the 14th also (Dec). So, we are being rather supersticious about not using that specific name - but might be open to some variations of it though.
Looking at all the names we have liked, it seems like we tend to like a lot of A's and S's in the name - but are not limiting our search to that.
So PLEASE send your suggestions and hubby and I will discuss them.
Thanks again! We really, really, really appreciate your help.

I am not going to overload you with more names at this point, but I have chosen these three categories of names I think you might like, especially with Alanna. The first category is Greek names like Cassandra, the second is three-syllable names ending in Y (for something different next to Alanna), and the third is Latin names - generally a well-rounded and diverse group to select from. I have starred my favorites with Alanna and provided some nickname options. Please let me know which you like so I can further narrow or widen the search. Good luck!

Hmmm modern yet unique names that go with Alanna:
Ariadne "Aria"
Calliope "Calli" (Could be Kalliope if that makes him feel better!)
Lyra
This is hard, but fun!

How about Cassia? Similar to Cassandra, but less common. You can still use the nickname Cassie if you'd like, but it's also beautiful on its own.

So far - out of the names listed - I like:
Arista
Angelica
Serena (but I would probably spell it Sarina)
Hubby really likes Serena/Sarina - even more than Roslyn. But I'm not quite there yet. We have been playing around with Anastasia, too. We both really like it, but despise the nn for it. If we found a good nn, we might go with this one.
I also like Cassia, but we have a friend named Kasia. So it wouldn't work for me.

I'm glad you and your husband liked Sarina! Just so you know, Sarina is not a variant of Serena; rather, it is a variant of Sarah, which is Hebrew for princess. That sounds perfect to me! So, while Serena is pronounced like 'serene' plus A, Sarina, is more like 'Sar' (as in Sara) plus "-eenuh"... a very pretty name, indeed.
What is the nickname that bothers you about Anastasia? Also, do you like the idea of both of your daughters having names beginning with A? I personally think Alanna and Anastasia have different, but similar, sounds considering the prevalence of A and N sounds.
It seems you and your husband also quite like names ending in A. Here are a few more possibilities:
Adamina "Addie"
Ariella "Ari, Ella"
Eva
Jessica* "Jess"
Joella
Leora
Medina
Priela
Selima
Shoshana
Tova
Belinda
Bianca
Brianna*
Calantha "Callie"
Danica
Demetra "Demi"
Finola
Fiona*
Georgina
Gisela*
Helena* "Leni, Lena"
Lorena
Lucia*
Marisa*
Paloma
Selena
Sienna
Sofia*
Vanessa
Viola
I'd personally choose a name that does NOT begin with a vowel, just because I think that it sounds a bit awkward when said quickly with Alanna. Good luck!

Sarina is very pretty. The only reason I don't go for it so much is its (Serena's) popularity. I'm not too fond of more popular names.
Anastacia - Anna, Stacy, Tasia, Asia, Tacey - don't like any of those nn.
I liked Ariella, but he wanted just plain Ariel.
I also like Geneva, but there is a town close to me and a Lake that a lot of people go to in WI (i'm from IL) by the name of Geneva.
Here are some that I've come across as I've continued searching. I don't know how his feelings are on these yet.
Sadie
Aniceta (his Anissa is derived from this)
Noelle
Alessandra (close to Cassandra, but I know he doesn't like Alexandra)
Arissa (close to his Anissa and Marisa)
These last two I'm unsure about:
Chessley (or Chesleigh)
Cipriana

One close to Roslyn is Carolyn.
