My 1 Week Old needs a name
by savingtime12 on Fri Oct 23, 2009 2:42 pm
So, last time I was here, my boyfriend and I came up through the responses here with the names Josephine Harper and Sloane Elizabeth for our daughter.
Well, our daughter is now 1 week old (she was born 3 weeks early) and neither of those names seem to fit her.
We thought for sure she would be a Josie. But, once we held her and started calling her Josie - it didn't fit. It felt a little too cutesy for her. She looks exactly like I did when I was a baby, so my mom suggested using my first name Ann, and calling her Annie. But, I think that's just weird.
My boyfriend, Ryan, keeps saying she looks like an Annie (well, duh) but I just don't feel comfortable using it. He agreed to me coming on here and asking for some help.
It seems like a nicknamey type name would fit her. Any name that's similar to Annie, but not Annie and has a more formal name with it would be really helpful. Thank you in advance.

Speaking as a fellow Ann, I'd have loved a longer "formal" name...hmm, what comes to mind...
Maragret nn Maggie/Maisie
Eleanor nn Ellie/Nora
Harriet nn Hattie
Dorothea nn Thea/Dory
Charlotte nn Charlie/Carly

Frances nn Fritzie, Frannie or Francie
Francesca... ditto on the nn's
Charlotte nn Lottie
Elizabeth nn Lizzie (I know you may have nixed this already)
Jane (no nickname but I think it is nice just like Annie)
Lucy
Louise nn Lulu

Angel
Angelica
Angelina - another nn for this is Lina
Annabel - another nn for this is Belle
Anneliese
Annika
All of the above could have the nn Anna. Or you could name her Anna. My favorite is either Annabel or Annika
other ideas
Antonia nn Nina
Audra
Audrey
Aurora nn Rory
I'm really in love with the name Olivia right now. It is very popular but it's great because it has so many nn's: Livia, Livvy, Liv, Ollie, and Olive. Wow! So versatile. Your daughter would have so many choices as she gets older.

It sounds like you like the idea of Josephine nn Josie but Josie is too cutesy of a nn? So we need other semi formal names with nn that aren't too cutesy. How about:
Josephine nn Joey (if it's the Josie nn that you don't like)
Miranda nn Mira/Miri
Allegra nn Ally (I know it's an allergy medication now but I still really like it)
Danica nn Dani
Charlotte nn Charlie
Therese nn Tess/Tessa
Julianna nn Jules/Julie
Eve or Eva nn Evie
Tabitha nn Tibby
Cordelia nn Cora/Delia
Vivian nn Vivi
Eleanor nn Nora
Jessamine nn Jess
Margaret nn Maisy

EDIT: Brought up Lettie to my BF. He loves it too. She really looks like a Lettie. God, thank you so, so, so much! Now we just have to decide on the long form.

Oh, I'm so glad you like it! :)
What middle name are you going with and what's the last name sound like? Those both could influence which to pick.
I think Scarlett is my favorite one.
I'm not sure Eletta has enough Oompf and Violetta could have pronounciation problems. (VI-oletta or VE-oletta)
