Sib for Adelaide? Eamon or Caedmon? Danae or Kaiya? Opinions
by bb2duesoon on Wed Aug 12, 2009 2:31 pm
Hi,
I'm due this week, we don't know what we're having and we are still waffling a bit on our top names choices. Our first daughter's name is Adelaide Danielle, which we had absolutely no doubts about (we had it picked even before I was pregnant), but we just don't feel as confident about any of the names we are considering for this baby.
Although Adelaide is a classic, traditional name, there aren't any other similar names we like for boys or girls. We generally like names that are not common and not too weird, but that also have some substance in their meaning.
These are the names at the top of our list at the moment:
BOYS: EAMON JOSIAH (We love the meaning and sound, but in my mind many "E" boy's
names seem weak, kind of woosy. We do like that it could be
shortened to "E.J.")
CAEDMON JOSIAH (This is a new one we're considering, but I'm afraid it might be
too unusual to go with Adelaide. We prefer the "Kade-mon"
pronunciation and like that it can be shortened to "Cade" or
maybe "C.J.", but I like "Cade" better.)
Other BOYS names on our list:
JUDE
FINN
JUSTUS
JONAH
(Gee, there's lots of "J" names, I just realized!)
GIRLS: DANAE MEGAN or DANAE MICHELINE (My husband really likes this and I used to,
but I'm not keen on the possible nickname of "Dani" for a girl. The middle
name Megan is to honour a close friend, Micheline is just one that my
husband thought went well with Danae.)
KAIYA / KAIA / KAIJA MEGAN RENEE (We like the meanings and sound of this name, though sometimes I think it sounds almost too trendy and doesn't go well with Adelaide. If we go with it, we would want to choose the spelling that is likely to be pronounced and spelled correctly with the least difficulty, so we are leaning towards Kaiya. Megan and Renee are middles names chosen to honour close friends and ones that we like and think go well with the first name.)
Other GIRLS names we've considered:
ISLA (like the sound, but kind of lacks substance in meaning)
ASHA
AURORA (hubby just thinks of "Aurora Borealis")
AMAYA
EMMELINE (like it sometimes, like the nn "Emmy", but the full name seems almost ultra-
feminine to me sometimes)
Lily
Honour
Veriy (love it, but hubby hates it!)
Cordelia
Madeliene (used to love it, like it now, sounds almost too similar to Adelaide though
and a bit overused in some places)
Elisha (hubby just thinks of Elisha Cuthbert or the Biblical male prophet, always
sounded like a girl's name to me though, and we like the nn "Ellie")
Any feedback/opinions on our top names or other names on our list would be great!
Thanks.

In the list of girl's names, "Veriy" should be "Verity".
"Madeliene" should also be spelled "Madeleine" (that's the spelling we like).

Adelaide and Eamon do "go." I like Jude, too, for a boy. I think of Adelaide as a high class German name (I lived in Germany, that is the only Adelaide I've ever met) which I associate with male names like Philip, Leo, Oscar and Felix. A word about Caedmon - this is my nephew's name - spelled the same way and pronounced CADEmon. When it has come up in the past a lot of people have misheard is as "caveman." Just fyi. For girls I think Clementine goes well with Adelaide as do Alice, June and Claudia... from your list - Isla.

BOYS: EAMON JOSIAH A lovely combo.
Adelaide and Eamon, nice sibset.
I also think that Josiah and Adelaide make a really nice sibset too. In fact I think I like it even more than Eamon with Adelaide.
CAEDMON JOSIAH Not a fan I am really sick of Caden, Braden, Jayden style names.
A few suggestions
Josiah Justus
Jude Finnigan
Jonas David
Jack Oliver
Jonah Dislike, reminds me of Jonah and the Whale
Comments on your list of girl's names
KAIYA You are right it doesn't go well with Adelaide at all. Your daughter is superbly named please keep this baby's name in harmony with Adelaide's by using another beautiful classic name.
ISLA I like it but do not love it
ASHA Is simply a boy's name Asher
AURORA Not for you if your husband doesn't like it
AMAYA Doesn't fit with Adelaide
EMMELINE A beautiful name
Lily Also lovely
Honour A great name I prefer Honor spelling. I also love Hope.
Veriy Take it off your list if your husband isn't onboard with it
Cordelia Another lovely name, similar to Calista which is lovely too
Madeliene I agree but it is a lovely name
Elisha It has to be Alicia otherwise it just says boys name and Biblical prophet.
Margaret nn Meg would be the name to honour Megan that fits perfectly with Adelaide
I love your daughter's name.
If you use Danae it is just like naming your baby Danielle again and I think your baby needs a name distinctly hers.
Adelaide and Victoria Honor
Adelaide and Emmeline Hope
Adelaide and Evangeline Lily
Adelaide and Lily Jane
Adelaide and Calista Louise
Adelaide and Eliza Hope
Adelaide and Mary Elizabeth
Adelaide and Cecily Anne
Adelaide and Lavinia Honor nn Vin
Adelaide and Verity Elspeth
Adelaide and Genevieve Lily, such a beautiful combo
Adelaide and Michaela (only this spelling!) Lily
Adelaide and Hope Micheline
Adelaide and Honor Harriet
Adelaide and Honor Caroline
Adelaide and Caroline Margaret nn Cara (meaning dearest or dear one), Caroline means Joy which is a lovely meaning
Adelaide and Pearl Emmeline
Adelaide and Clementine Louise
Adelaide and Margaret Lily
Adelaide and Elizabeth Ruth
I love Honor and Hope.
Micheline is a beautiful name but a different naming style to Adelaide.
I absolutely love Jack Oliver and Adelaide Danielle.

Adelaide is beautiful. I like Eamon I don't think it is weak for a boy. I also liked your options of Jude, Finn and Jonah. I am not really on board with Danae. I do like some of you other options Isla and Cordelia.

I really like Danae Micheline, and I don't see why people would shorten an already short name with 2 syllables to a tottally different name again with 2 syllables?

Adelaide Danielle - very pretty name!
BOYS: EAMON JOSIAH - I like Eamon and Josiah. They sound nice together.
CAEDMON JOSIAH - not my style
Other BOYS names on our list:
JUDE - like it
FINN - like it as a nn for Finnian.
JUSTUS - To me, this sounds like "just us". Bothers me. I like Justice better.
JONAH - like it, I am reminded of Jonah and the Whale. I like that Jonah.
What about Jack? It is so popular, but it is wonderful with Adelaide. They sound so Australian together. Could be Jack, John nn Jack, or Jackson.
Also love Henry and Adelaide.
GIRLS: DANAE MEGAN or DANAE MICHELINE - Danae is too similar to Danielle. Micheline reminds me of the tire co. I like Marcheline better
KAIYA / KAIA / KAIJA MEGAN RENEE - I don't like names like Kaiya, etc. They sound too trendy. I'm a classical and vintage name lover. But I do love Keira. I don't think it's bad with Adelaide. It is a girl's name.
Other GIRLS names we've considered:
ISLA (like the sound, but kind of lacks substance in meaning) - I'm getting a bit bored with it, but a lot of Nameberryites love Isla. I prefer Iona and Iris.
ASHA - don't like - makes me think of a sneeze.
AURORA (hubby just thinks of "Aurora Borealis") - love this, nn Rory.
AMAYA - not my cup of tea
EMMELINE - I don't really like it, but a lot of the Nameberry posters love it! I trust their judgement.
Lily - love, but it's very popular. I would use the full name Lillian nn Lily so she doesn't feel cheated next to the long and lustrous Adelaide.
Honour - I'm used to it spelled Honor, but I think I could get used to Honour depending on where you live. If you live in the U.S., Honour sounds kind of pretentious to me. But maybe not considering her sister has such a fancy name.
Veriy (love it, but hubby hates it!)
Cordelia - LOVE! One of my faves, and sounds great with Adelaide.
Madeliene - it's spelled Madeline or Madeleine - I really love this name, but it's been overused. What about Matilda or Millicent?
Elisha - I wouldn't give a boy's name to a sister of Adelaide. Too confusing! Would love the name Elijah for Adelaide's brother!
Idea:
Wilhelmina would be adorable with Adelaide.
If you don't live in Australia, Adelaide and Matilda would be so cute together. But I think maybe in Australia, people would think they're too matchy.
Also love Adelaide and Genevieve.
Thanks.[/quote]

Just wanted to note that we live in Canada, so "Honour" is how we'd naturally spell it, plus, with Adelaide being a name that can be associated with both Britain and Austrailia, I would think that the British spelling of Honour would work better. However, while I don't like overly feminine names, sometimes I wonder if Honour is not feminine enough next to Adelaide. Opinions? I'm not sure how likely my husband is to go for either of the virtue names on our list though (Verity and Honour).

One more thing I thought I'd add to give some background to the choice of "Kaija/Kaiya". This is a Scandinavian (Kaija) and Japanese (Kaiya) name. Our last name is a Finnish name that starts with "L", so that is partly why we started liking this name, however we thought that the Japanese spelling would spelled and pronounced correctly more often than the Finnish spelling. Also, I lived in Japan and, as a result, am drawn towards some Japanese things (though most Japanese names sound too exotic).
I do realize that most of this background information doesn't really change whether or not anyone is going to think that Kaiya goes with Adelaide, I just wanted to explain where this name choice came from since it is so different from Adelaide.
