What do you think of....
by dotsmom on Sat Sep 26, 2009 8:05 pm
Aggie as a nickname? I know that it has Texas A&M connotations, but maybe those are just regional. I am still exploring options for my twin daughters names due in a couple of months. Big sister is Dorothy Violet (nn Dottie, Dot, with Dorrie and Dora as possible variation nns). Dottie and Aggie and ____?? Is this horrible or does it have some possibility? I thought I had settled on Adelaide (Addie) and Matilda (Mattie prefer, Tillie option), but I am not so sure anymore. I made a list of possible combinations for the girls names, but it was so long it was ridiculous. I would appreciate your comments.
This is starting to really stress me out. :-(
BTW, if I can narrow it down to about 5 or 6 different possible combinations, my husband and I can narrow it down from there.
*Edit* No longer considering Aggie as nn for daughter. Husband vetoed because of Texas Aggies (not that we dislike them, we just don't think that it would be good for her if she were an Aggie and named Aggie or if she went to a rival school and was named Aggie... etc.) I will put it on my "dog name" list. I love our dogs!**

I grew up in Texas so I'd always think of the Aggies . . . who were really obnoxious fans I thought! I saw your other post and thought you had so many great combinations - it was hard to choose which I liked best. Are you just looking for new nicknames, or all together new names?

New names, new nicknames... I want to start over... If I end up at the same place that I was before... then so be it... but I had such mixed reviews from my family members that I want to start over and make sure that I really have the right names for these girls.

More than likely it would be Agatha.
I have gone through so many names, that I am not even sure what my tastes are anymore!!!

Hi, Kate! I have to admit that I'm personally not an Aggie fan because it sadly makes me think of agony and saggy. Agatha itself has been growing on me, though. I guess it's just the hard g sound that feels a bit harsh to me, especially with the soft and perky Dottie.
I think of Dottie as being cheerful and happy, and Aggie as being more serious and somber.
I have to say that I'm actually excited that you're still searching for names, because I love your style! :-)
What first names are you thinking of now?
Just for fun, some names I see with Dorothy that have probably been suggested before:
Alice
Adelia
Beatrice (I think you dislike this one)
Cora/Cordelia
Celia
Evangeline
Eleanora
Estelle
Evelyn
Edith
Frances
Florence
Helen(a) (nn Nell)
Hazel
Harriet
Henrietta
Ivy
Isadora
Iris
Josephine
Louisa
Lillian
Margaret
Maude
Mabel
Miriam
Olive
Penelope (nn Nell or Poppy)
Rose
Pearl
Ruby
Ruth/Ruthie
Susannah
Tess
Tabitha (nn Tibbie...Susan suggested this the other night somewhere, and I thought it was darling)
Vivien/Vivienne
Willa
I hope you're doing well, and I just know you'll find perfect names! :-)
Take care!

I don't love Aggie (just to be honest). I do love Maggie - could it be short for Madeline? Or Addie for Adeline?

With Dorothy nn Dot, I love:
Adelaide nn Addie
Anastasia nn Tansy
Azalea nn Lea
Bernadette nn Birdie - this would be so cute with Dot
Calandra nn Callie
Carlotta nn Lottie
Cecily nn Cessie
Clotilda nn Coco, Tilda, or Tillie - this would be different!
Drusilla nn Dru
Elizabeth nn Libby
Fiona nn Fina or Fifi
Frances or Francesca nn Francie
Frida
Henrietta nn Hattie
Isadora nn Izzy
Jacaranda nn Jackie
Jacqueline nn Jackie
Josephine nn Josie or Fina or Posy
Katherine nn Kitty - so cute with Dot
Louisa nn Lulu
Lucinda nn Lucy - but Lucy is probably too popular for you.
Margaret nn Maisie - I love Maisie
Matilda nn Mattie or Tillie or Tilda
Millicent nn Milly
Minerva nn Minnie
Mirabel or Mirabella nn Mira or Miri
Miranda nn Miri
Miriam nn Miri
Penelope nn Nell
Persia - I know of a lady named Percia or Persha, has anyone heard of it? I can't find it on Nameberry. I think it's the feminine form of Perseus.
Romilly nn Romy or Milly
Rosemary nn Romy
Sylvie
Tabitha nn Tibbie
Theda
Thisbe
Vivian nn Vivi
Wilhelmina nn Willa or Billie - Billie would be so cute with Dot!
Winifred nn Freddie or Winnie
Of my list, I would pick Margaret nn Maisie, Jacqueline nn Jackie, Henrietta nn Hattie, Bernadette nn Birdie, Anastasia nn Tansy, Cecily nn Cessie, Josephine nn Josie, Elizabeth nn Libbie, or Tabitha nn Tibbie to go with Dot. Of this list my faves are: Henrietta nn Hattie, Bernadette nn Birdie, and Anastasia nn Tansy. That's considering what I think is your taste.
If I were naming my own daughters and I had a last name that would work with any first name, I would name them Lucinda nn Lucy and Francesca nn Francie. I know Lucy is so popular, but I adore that name beyond reason. I also love Phoebe beyond all reason, but it doesn't have a nickname, and I think you love nicknames.
