HELP Need Literary Names
by sadye on Fri Sep 18, 2009 9:47 pm
Hi everyone, I'm new here and I need some help. See we are expecting a new member into our family in December (on my bday) , yet we dont have a name. Our other children are girls and their names are Langston (as in Langston Hughes), Annabella-Lee (as in the poem), and Tennyson (as in Lord Tennyson). The new one is also a girl. As you can tell my hubby and I love the literary names. LOL! Does anyone out there know any other cool literary names and or authors that will fit nicely with the others?

Hi! :-) If you click on "hot lists" on the left, you'll find a list featuring literary names for girls. (It's called Literary Names for Girls.) :-) There's also a list called "Author Names."
Some of my favorite literary names:
Briony (although I believe the plant name is spelled Bryony)
Cosette
Esme (from Salinger, not Twilight) :-)
Evangeline
Juliet
Jessamine
Marigold
Rosamond
Scarlett
Tamsin
Willa
If you're looking for something less like Anabella-Lee (I love the Annabel Lee poem) and more like Tennyson and Langston, you may like:
August
Bronte (I can't type the accent)
Flannery
Harper (although this has become pretty popular/trendy)
Salinger (kind of out there, but you could call her Sally)
Good luck! :-)

I don't think this was on the list, but I thought I'd suggest Sinclair, too. I think she could easily be nicknamed Claire.
Good luck!

I love the suggestions of Sinclair and Bronte!
Some author first and last names for girls I think would be lovely:

Angelou
Dylan
Keats (although probably too matchy with Tennyson)
Millay
Rumer
Shelley
Zora
Emerson
Sylvia
Eliot
Olive
Toni
Tennessee
Thornton
Some more names from poems (like Annabel Lee)
Eulalie (Poe)
Lenore (Poe)
Tamerlane (Poe)
Mariana (Tennyson)
Lucy Gray (Wordsworth)
Christabel (Coleridge)
Lara (Byron)
Parisina (Byron)
I love your daughters' names, and the literature they celebrate!

Let see great suggestions so far not sure how much more I can contribute.
Sinclair fits perfectly with your other names, which are all wonderful.
Austen - girl or boy
Auden - I love the nn Audie
Frost - born December, not sure if you'll like that.
Countee Cullen was the first poet I read on my own in the third grade.
Allen or Allyn - I actually like Allen for a girl.
Aristotle - might be a little far out there.
Carroll
Dryden
Eliot
Hawthorne
Homer - right there with Aristotle
Ibsen
Marlowe
Parker
Sheridan

Isadora - Erica Jong
Juliet - William Shakespeare
Juno - Sean O'Casey (Love this)
Lolita - Vladimir Nabokov (Lola nn sounds great with Annabella)
Mamie - Henry James

Goodmorning everyone, thank you soooo much for your advice. I just want to run down some of my choices, tell me what you think....
Ellis-Salinger (my hubby's choice)
Cristabella-Angelou
Scarlett-Sinclair
Tennessee-Aurora
Isadora-Bronte
Tamsin-Keats (out there I know)
Ghanima-Lenora(love Herbert's Dune)
Parisina-Frost( I have promise's to keep and miles to go before I sleep)
So what do you think so far? Please feel free to make improvements.

Glad you liked some of the suggestions. Before I comment, can I check whether these are all first and middle name choices, or whether you're going for a hyphenated single name? I'd advise against this. While it works for Annabella-Lee, for example, I think it's too much with the choices below. So I will comment on them as if they are free-standing first and middle names.
Ellis-Salinger (my hubby's choice) - I like these two together, but they do sound a little bit masculine to me. If this is an adaptation of Elliot or Ellison, I'd suggest Ellery. Ellery Salinger sounds very pretty to me!
Cristabella-Angelou - I love both these names, but together they are very flowery. They make me think of a big Venetian glass chandelier. I would take one flourish off and go for Christabel Angelou.
Scarlett-Sinclair - I think these are gorgeous together.
Tennessee-Aurora - I also love these together. My only query is whether Tennessee is quite similar to Tennyson? (I know, I suggested it!) How about Aurora Tennessee?
Isadora-Bronte - I love this!
Tamsin-Keats (out there I know) - Actually, I quite like this, although I prefer some of your other ideas.
Ghanima-Lenora(love Herbert's Dune) - sorry, not a fan.
Parisina-Frost( I have promise's to keep and miles to go before I sleep) - This is quite different, but there's something about it I really like. Frost works really well as a mn.
My favourite is Isadora Bronte followed by Scarlett Sinclair.
