Last Name "Winter"...?
by follow sybil on Mon Sep 07, 2009 5:16 pm
Hello!
Here is a small problem...and a call for opinions!
My NEW married name is "Winter," which, I must say, is quite a lovely name (MUCH better than my maiden!). But keep in mind, this great new name is a "word" name.
As I search and search for girls name I find myself naturally drawn to "word" names, my favorites being:
Iris Winter
Rose Winter
Rosemary Winter
Constance Winter
Hazel Winter
There are other "non-word" names that I am also quite fond of, which, when said with my last name sound like a part of sentence:
Iona Winter (really?)
Mary Winter (Merry Christmas!)
Ida Winter (Whose-a winter?)
My question is: should I avoid wordy-names? or names that sound sentencey with my last name?
At this moment my favorite names from those above are Rose and Iris. They also seem to be acceptable to my family, who balk at the sound of my top 3 names ---Imogen, Jemima, and Isidora (which sound GREAT with my last name! ...sigh!...)
SO: which are best...which are worst...which sound cheesy...dignified...etc??>
Rose Winter
Iris Winter
Imogen Winter
Jemima Winter (nn Jemma?)
Isidora Winter

I know this is no help, but I like them all! What a great last name. I think you're ok with the floral names because Winter isn't a problem like objects might be - Stone, etc. And I also like your other choices. If I have to choose just one it would be Iris Winter followed by Imogen Winter.

I have to admit that I think you should steer clear of word names with your last name. I had the same problem with using the first name Georgia: I loved wordy middle names, and yet they all sounded tacky with Georgia. (As in, Georgia Summer, Georgia Skye.) However, there are some word names that may work better for you than others. Rose Winter is a definite no, but Iris Winter is well worth consideration, especially if you balance it with a non-word middle name. I think the point is to use word names that are not very common words, so they do not make people immediately think "word name".
On middle names, have you thought about using one of your word names as a middle? You could still use the name you liked and there would be a lot less complication with your last name, as the middle name is heard a lot less that the first.
As for the rest of your names, I love Imogen and Jemima (and Iris). Have you thought about using Gemma by itself? But wait, that sounds like Gem Awinter...
Here are some possible name combos:
Iris Jane (or Faye) Winter
Iris Abigail Winter
Iris Genevieve Winter
Imogen Maeve Winter
Imogen Eliana Winter
Imogen Annabelle Winter
Jemima Ariana Winter
Jemima Grace Winter (Grace is sort of a generic middle name, but I think it goes well with Jemima)
Jemima Lillian Winter (that sort of sounds like "Jemima Lily In Winter")
Some other first names that might work for you are:
Adelaide (nickname Addie?)
Azalea (word name! possible nickname: Lea?)
Bina
Catherine (nickname Cate or Catie)
Clementine (another not-too-obvious word name)
Constanza (it's almost the same name as Constance without being too word-y, which I think Constance is)
Eliza
Ivy (another word)
Julia/Juliet
Keira (I don't normally go for this name, but I think it sounds sweet with Winter, maybe middle name Jane?)
Liana
Liesel
Madeleine (although inevitable nickname Maddie sounds kind of like Mad E. Winter)
Nicola
Sadie
EDIT: I just thought of this new combination: Charlotte Sophia Winter. What do you think?

My NEW married name is "Winter," which, I must say, is quite a lovely name (MUCH better than my maiden!). But keep in mind, this great new name is a "word" name. - I love the last name Winter.
As I search and search for girls name I find myself naturally drawn to "word" names, my favorites being:
Iris Winter - like it okay
Rose Winter - like it.
Rosemary Winter - like it.
Constance Winter - it sounds like Winter will never end.
Hazel Winter - I don't like this, not sure why.
There are other "non-word" names that I am also quite fond of, which, when said with my last name sound like a part of sentence:
Iona Winter (really?) - Yeah, sounds like I own a winter.
Mary Winter (Merry Christmas!) - I have to think about this. In a way, I like it. There's something sweet about it. Old fashioned.
Ida Winter (Whose-a winter?) - Don't like it.
My question is: should I avoid wordy-names? or names that sound sentencey with my last name? - Depends on the name. I would take it name by name.
At this moment my favorite names from those above are Rose and Iris. They also seem to be acceptable to my family, who balk at the sound of my top 3 names ---Imogen, Jemima, and Isidora (which sound GREAT with my last name! ...sigh!...)
Only your husband or partner should be allowed to help you name your baby.
Rose Winter - yes, I'm starting to love it.
Iris Winter - no, I don't like "ris" and "Win" so close together.
Imogen Winter
Jemima Winter (nn Jemma?) I love Jemima Winter, but Jemma Winter takes all the joy out of your last name for me.
Isidora Winter - I love Isadora more than Isidora, because Isadora just looks more graceful. Isadora Winter is very pretty.
My grandmother-in-law's maiden name was Winters. Her name was Laura Winters. If Winter was my last name, I would give my daughter a warm and cozy name to go with it like:
Anna Winter
Cameron Winter
Caroline Winter nn Calla Winter
Catherine nn Cate Winter
Chloe Winter - popular, but so pretty
Evelyn Winter
Jacqueline Winter
Lara Winter - makes me think of "Dr. Zhivago"
Laura Winter
Leona Winter
Maeve Winter
Naomi Winter - I don't usually suggest Naomi, but I like it with Winter. also Noemi
Olivia Winter - Olivia is so popular, but I love it with Winter
Penelope Winter - cheerful, nn Nell Winter - love it!
Ruby Winter - Ruby is so warm and happy with Winter! And it is a word name.
Stella Winter - sounds like a star at night.
Vivian Winter nn Vivi Winter, I like it.
My faves are Laura Winter, Ruby Winter, Penelope nn Nell Winter, and Olivia Winter. If I loved Naomi, it would be one of my faves, too.

Rose Winter: Rose is one of my favorite names, but something just seems "off" with Rose Winter. Hmm...I can't place my finger on it, but it may be the flow. Hmm... I do love Rose, though! I think that Rosalie Winter, Rosamel Winter and Rosaline or Rosalind Winter sound great, though!
Iris Winter: I hear Ira Swinter when I say it out loud...
Imogen Winter: Like Rose Winter, something doesn't sound right to me with this combo, either. Hmm...
Jemima Winter (nn Jemma?): I think that this combo works better than the others...
Isidora Winter: Like Susan, I love the Isadora spelling, but I hear "Is a door a Winter" when I say it out loud, so it feels too noun-heavy to me. (The -ra ending with Winter is also a bit awkward for me to say...)
I absolutely LOVE your last name!
Just for fun, here are some names that I think are gorgeous with your amazing last name:
Aveline Winter
Annabelle Winter (although Anna Wintour is the editor of Vogue, and she's pretty well covered in the media)
Cordelia Winter
Josephine Winter
Louisa Winter
Marielle Winter (close to Mary, but the Elle prevents the "Merry Winter" issue)
Miranda Winter
Mirabelle Winter
Penelope Winter
Rosalie Winter (I think the flow works better than Rose Winter)
Rosamel Winter
Rosabelle Winter
Viola Winter
Good luck! :-)

I just realized that I posted this with out the top half of what I wrote. I write in notebook and then copy and paste here. It helps me to not pick names already suggested.
The missing piece. -***Winters was my great great grandmothers last name. Her full name was Rebecca Josephine Winters but she went by Josephine Winters. I always thought that was a beautiful name. Her daughters were Lela Winters, Violet Winters, Hazel Winters, Ditha Winters (I don't know if Ditha was short for anything) and Wilda Winters (ditto on the name length). I've always wanted to use Winter(s) some how.
Joanna suggested Charlotte Sophia Winter and I think Sophia Winter looks beautiful. ***
I also like Susan's suggestions of Naomi Winter (love this one), Lara Winter,
and Chloe Winter.
Jill's names that I love Josephine Winter (love it. My gg grandmothers name) and Marielle Winter.
Iris Winter - I think is really pretty especially with a long mn.
Iona Winter - I would switch to Ione Winter with Ione pronounced eye-oh-nee or spell it Ionie.
Isadora Winter - is very pretty too I'd pick a shorter mn.
How about-
Alternatives to Constance-
Colleen Winter
Colette Winter
Coralie Winter
Corinne Winter
Carina Winter
Karina Winter
Courtney Winter
Carissa Winter
Carys Winter
Alison Winter
Dahlia Winter
Genevieve Winter
Lauren Winter (or any variation of Lauren)
Marina Winter
Maryann/Marianne Winter
Maryjane Winter (has that Imogen feel to me blended with Mary that you like)
Rhian Winter
Sidonie Winter
Veronica Winter (reminds me of an old Holdwood name)
I'm going to say that Naomi Winter and Josephine Winter are my favorites so far.
