Rethinking our girl names -please help with alternatives
by moxielove on Fri Aug 07, 2009 5:39 pm
I'm 5 weeks away from my due date. We narrowed our boy choices down to 2, but after having essentially decided on a girl's name, now I'm not sure at all.
Maybe it's the hormones, or the stress of knowing the baby could come at any time. I feel need to "re"expand my list and get some fresh thoughts. Please take a look at the names below and help with alternative suggestions:
Isis
Briar
Astrid (I want a name like Astrid, but not Astrid....)
Signe
Lux (my parents can't get behind this one since it was a brand of soap....LOL)
Skye
I love Stella but it doesn't go with our last name - in fact, anything ending in "y" or "ie" would sound problematic.
Names we don't like that are likely to be suggested:
Isla
Iris
Fiona
Ingrid (I like but it's too close to the name of a former ex of my DH)
If I had a style I'd tell you!! Thanks so any help - I'm going crazy and convinced she will come without us having a name prepared, and then in 2 months I'll be writing a "Baby Name Remorse" post!!!!

I think Adair would be a nice alternative to Astrid. It's kind of similar to Briar.

How exciting!
Isis - I prefer Iris, because I love flowers. But I see that you don't like the name Iris.
Briar - this is different, but it's just a bit too brambly for me.
Astrid (I want a name like Astrid, but not Astrid....) - I love Astrid, but, yeah, after that Office episode, I can see how some people don't like it.
Signe - this is fascinating to me. How do you pronounce it?
Lux (my parents can't get behind this one since it was a brand of soap....LOL) - I don't really like it. But I love the name Lucy.
Skye - I would like this as a middle.
I love Stella but it doesn't go with our last name - in fact, anything ending in "y" or "ie" would sound problematic.
Names we don't like that are likely to be suggested:
Isla
Iris
Fiona
Ingrid (I like but it's too close to the name of a former ex of my DH)
What about:

Thanks for all the fantastic suggestions!!
Jill, thanks for reminding me that "Ciel" was on my original list and I loved it. I love the meaning, and that it's french.
Susan, "Signe" is properly pronounced See-na, with the "a" sound very subtle or even silent. It will definitely be mispronounced "Sig-Nee" but that's maybe ok. I prefer Isis over Iris b/c of the association with a favorite Bob Dylan song, and the potential for the nn Icey.
I love the suggestions of Sigrid, and think I like Sidra better. I would love a name that means sky or star.
Liesl was unfortunately nixed by the hubby months ago but remains a favorite.
Petra I love!! I'm a geologist so this one is esp. great.
And Tilda/Mathilde is a common danish name so this would make my mom very very pleased, and I love the nickname Tillie.
So many of the other names look great but I worry about nicknames (ie. Tamsin --> HATE the nn Tammy).
Thanks everyone - these are some great & different names.
PS the last name is Kelly -- that's why the restriction on "ee" at the end. I just don't like the sound of Stella Kelly or Estelle Kelly.
