Charlie, Leo, or Another?
by danal on Sat Oct 17, 2009 1:43 pm
Here's what has been vetoed by DH or ruled out so far:
Charles Leo
Leo Augustus
Leo Patrick
Leo Frederick
Leo Thomas
We can't use:
William, Daniel, Jonathan, Stephen due to family members (probably some others too that I'm not even recalling right now).
If we went with Louis (nn Louie), any middle name ideas? all the ones ending in s don't work. My husband has so far refused to respond to Louie questions, and I'm not sure what that means. If we have a girl, its Louisa, and he loves that. What his problem is with Patrick, Frederick, Thomas, I don't know!
We have concerns about the popularity of Charlie, but I'm okay with it. I really love Leo more, but he seems to have trouble saying ok to it. I think he thinks it doesn't go with Jane or Henry. I am trying to balance a latin name with a more English/German type name, if possible.
Thanks in advance for your opinions and suggestions! (My c-section is a month from today!!!)

I'm not a huge fan of Charlie on its own but as nn for Charles it's great! And perfect with Jane and Henry. Charles Augustus is a fabulous combo!!!
Saying that though, I adore Leo! It has such a handsome quirky Victorian charm to it. I think it goes with Jane and Henry well.
Some ideas:
Charles Alden
Charles Alistair
Charles Atticus
Charles Byron
Charles Elliot
Charles Finnian
Charles Maxim
Charles Oliver
Charles Phinneas
Charles Quentin
Charles Tobin
Louis Anthony
Louis Benjamin
Louis Bennett
Louis Donovan
Louis Everett
Louis Gabriel
Louis Finlay
Louis Franklin
Louis Maxwell
Louis Theron
Here are some random suggestions:
August
Edmund -- I love Edmund Leo!
Gareth
Graham
Julian
Tobin

Charles Augustus is so handsome! Very nice:) I love Leo too but with your last name both Leo and Louis have to much of an alliteration thing going on, but that's just me. Charlie is a great nn too, I should know lol
Good Luck:)

Thanks you all! I have to admit, Leo Francis wasn't doing a lot for me either - I like both names, but perhaps they don't go together so well. I was just so bummed all my other combos got vetoed. Each had some sort of tie to family too. Plus, Leo's been my favorite boy name for over two years now, so its hard to let that go completely. Just before bed, I asked my husband what he was currently thinking on names, and he just said, "not Leo."
Charles is a huge family name for my husband's side, so that feels right in a way (and frankly, odd that no one else has used it yet - this will be my in-law's 13th grandkid or something - they even have 6 great-grandchildren!). And Augustus will honor my mom's side of the family even though I know nothing about that particular ancestor. I just hope there aren't other little Charlie's his age every where we go!

Charles Augustus Landrum is absolutely incredible! And, Charlie will always be a popular name, as most classics are. However, I think as names like
Brayden and Zaide become more common, Charlie will seem refreshingly normal and simply handsome! A
I think Leopold Charles Landrum, with the nickname Leo, would flow better than just Leo personally.

Thanks Lemon! I agree Leopold is nice, but my husband vetoed Leo in all its forms . . . AND I thought he might be having second thoughts about Charles and/or Augustus because I caught him looking at "Beyond Ava and Aidan" -- so I e-mailed him Elea's list of ideas, and he said he preferred Atticus to Augustus really. Turns out, he was looking at the baby name book because he had a mind block and could only remember he really liked the name from To Kill A Mockingbird but was too lazy to come downstairs and find the book! (I had, of course, parked the baby naming books on his nightstand a couple of months ago!)
I felt that Augustus might flow a little better than Atticus, but screaming "Charles Atticus" upstairs seemed to work better (in my imagination - I did not actually try it out:)). And, being Greek, its closer to my son's middle name, Atlas, which my husband also loved and pushed for. Also, and this was not a deciding factor by any means, but I realized Charles Augustus is the name of the Lindbergh baby -- I wasn't going to let that stop me, but it felt like a little hiccup. Anyway, I've got two weeks and one day (at most) to go, and we'll see whether we've got a Charlie or a Louisa! Thanks to you all!

I love that you're considering Atticus now in place of Augustus. While I think that Charlie Augustus flows well, I can't get Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (with Augustus Gloop) out of my head.
