How popular is Emma really?
This has been my favorite girls name for decades, but I wouldn't want my daughter to be the eighth Emma in her class. There are no Emmas in my son's daycare, and my husband hasn't taught many of them either. Is it really as popular as it seems on the name lists?

You can check the popularity by state on the SSA list and see how popular Emma is in your particular state - she may well be less common there than in the U.S. as a whole.
For example, I live in California, and Madison was ranked #19 here in 2010, though she was #8 nationwide. On the other side of the coin, Camila was #14 in California and #61 throughout the country.

I don't think it's overly popular, the chances are high though they will have another Emma in their school, but it's a very nice name

Oh nice, I didn't know that about looking up by state. It's #3 in my state, so same as nationwide.

Can you check by hospital? I had heard there was a way to do that. If I figure it out, I will let you know.

A have known quite a few Emmas so it seems pretty popular to me. But I say who cares! My name is Stephanie and I have known a ton of other Stephanies! It never once bothered me, it is a great name in my opinion. I really don't think your daughter will care if she is the only Emma or one of 4 in her class. I bet she loves her name regardless.

This. I know one Emma who is about 2-3 y/o, and one who is about 16, but I know there a lot of them out there.
That's the tricky thing, though--despite the fact that there are so many kids out there with top-10 names like Emma (or Sophia, or Isabella, or Olivia, or whatever), I've only ever met two Emmas, and I know more Autumns (11!) than I know Isabellas, Sophias, Avas, Abigails, Olivias, Madisons, Mias, Chloes, Emmas, and Emilys combined. I know about 22 Elijahs, and that's more than double the number of kids I know who have names from the rest of the boys' top 20 for last year. I just don't know many kids at all with the uber-popular names, but some people, that's all they know! So it'll depend on where you are, what names people are using, etc.

In my area, which is out of the USA, it's not that common. I'm not sure what the national ranking is, but I have one in my daycare, and I can't think of a single Emma I've known other than her.

I know five Emmas and twice that many Emilys. I also know two Emelias and an Emmy.
