    Thoughts on the name Dorothy?

I love the name Dorothy and it has a lot of meaning for me and my family.

Firstly, my favourite movie is the Wizard of Oz and it holds a very special place in my heart. I even have reference to it as a tattoo.

Secondly, Dorothy was the name of my great grandmother, who I never met. People tell me that I resemble her however and she was, and still is deeply loved by all who knew her. She was apparently a wonderful lady.

My worry is that Dorothy is just that...a grandma name. I don't know if its usable on a little girl these days or whether it just sounds too old fashioned. What are your thoughts on the name?

Dorothy is a beautiful name and one that is ready for a big comeback, it's very much on the rise in the UK and has reentered the top 1000 in the US for 2011.

The name seems perfect for you, with honouring your great grandmother and the Wizard of Oz association.

I love the adorable nickname Dot/Dottie, which is the cutest thing for while a little Dorothy is young. There is also Dorothea, which you might find a little more modern looking.

There is a girl in my class named Dorothy, and we all call her Dottie. I think it is such a sweet name, and being the name nerd I am, I always complement her on it! I think it is definitely ready to come back!

I grew up on a street where there was this very pleasant, and friendly elderly lady named Dorothy. So that's exactly what I think of.
And the fact that the Wizard of Oz movie is such an older classic, furthers that feel?

I think of it the same way I think of Theodora. It's not one you hear everyday, but it has it's place in the world today. I think it's totally usable and cute on a young girl. Plus if you use it now you'll be ahead of the curve!

That is truely weird, just this morning I looked up Dorothy in my name book!!!!
I love the nn Thea so was considering Dorothea as a name.

I wonder what you did, is it too old lady? I figure Thea isn't old lady. Dottie is cute. I knew a sib set Phillipa and Dorothy who were called Pip and Dot!

I can't separate it from Dorothy on "The Golden Girls." Old lady name then? Not necessarily--look at Sophia!

Love Dottie and Thea as a nn.
