Humble, unpretentious names

Hi guys!

I'm looking for some humble, unpretentious names, preferably ones that aren't currently trendy. Strong and friendly names. I especially need a boys' name like this. A nickname form would work, too.

I've bounced Leo, James (Jamie?), and Julius (Jules?) in my head.

Any suggestions at all would be super helpful!

Leo and James are great. Julius, not so much - I immediately think of Julius Cesear and that's a pretty grandiose association.

A few more suggestions: Henry/Harry, Harvey, Jeffrey, Benjamin, Christopher

For girls: Anne/Annie, Mary, Frances

I agree Julius is a very pretentious name! I thought of Thomas nn Tommy

Charlie: the friendliest and least pretentious name there is.

I also like Nella for a girl.

I agree with Charlie - also Freddie. Very friendly and salt of the earth.

I do like Charlie, but it has so recently experienced a hike in popularity that I am warded off.

Right now I'm leaning towards James, with Leo a close second. I like the suggestion of Nella!

What about Hugo? Hughie could be his nn - I knew a Hugh nn Hughie and it totally worked.
