name regret update-since the thread came back around....

SO- If you were given the license to rename your child anything as a "nickname", would you use a GP name, or try to find something more traditional in the event that it might stick? How seriously would you take it? ETA DH told me he doesn't care what it is as long as she keeps her name (legally).

I'd at least consider DH's opinion. It's his child, too. If he absolutely despises Cleopatra, then I'd ditch that and try to find something tolerable to him as well as satisfying to me.

However, my father has never (as far as I can recall) ever called me by my formal name. He's always called by my nickname, and he's the only one in my entire family who calls me by that name. My mom calls me by another totally different nickname, also one that no one else in my family uses except her. So it's completely plausible that you call her one name, and your DH calls her by another. Eventually you two will find your own nicknames for her in time. Don't try to force it too much. It will work itself out.

Hi There, thank you for sharing that story, I am glad to hear you have not experienced an identity crisis with the different names you have had going on! I appreciate this anecdote immensely since I've never had this dynamic before. The problem we've always had is that a few days after he says he can tolerate a name (most of which he can't anyway) he changes his mind and says he absolutely despises it. This has been both before and after the naming process. Of course the one time I experienced a similar change of opinion I committed to Rosalie and have now changed my mind, so I suppose it's tit-for-tat. Difference is, I filled out the paperwork. Ack.

I can see your point about not forcing it, I am just struggling with what to call her and most of the time I stutter to just say "baby".

And he's now told me he doesn't care what I call her. Thanks for relating your story.
