Ten years ago I brought home my family's female Chocolate Lab, Sweet Sophia Kiley Browne. She was 8 weeks old. It took us 2 days to name her, and my Mom kept suggesting Molly as a name, but I kept thwarting it--I didn't think she was exactly a 'Molly' somehow. On Day 2 I was brainstorming madly and I was trying to get a name out of 'Espresso' at that point, and I said out loud. It went a little something like: 'Espresso, so, so...SOPHIA!".
Everyone really liked the name Sophia/Sophie immediately, and it really did and does fit her so well--it is very difficult for me to imagine her with any other name. She has been an absolute dream since day one--my family has a joke that goes "How did Sophie get so good? She was born!"...haha...For quite a while I strictly called her by Sophia, not Sophie, but I am the only one who calls her Sophia regularly instead of Sophie, it seems!
Next up is Sampson Guthrie Buster Browne. He is my family's 3-year-old male Chocolate Lab. He goes by Sampson (long story on how he got that name, I didn't give it to him, just added the 'p' because he's extra 'special'...
) or Sampy.
My family's 3rd dog, a female German Shepherd/Malamute/Lab mix was originally a 'visitor' or 'favor' as my family agreed to care for her for a friend of my father's as she was from a litter of puppies who survived quite a severe flood. She is now over a year old and she is still at my parent's house--they now want to make sure she is theirs forever (and in writing, no less)! She came to us with the name Cara, and since the others had four names, she also got four--Cara Mia Merriweather Dylan!
At the house I reside in with my SO, we have 3 cats. 2 were his when we met, both males--their names are Albert (Al) & Samuel (Sam), respectively.
I got my female Persian-Himalayan two years ago when she was a tiny kitten. I named her Juno Gracen Bleu (Juno).
We are also supposed to be getting a puppy TOMORROW, I am so excited I cannot even sleep! He is a male black & white English Springer Spaniel and is ridiculously adorable. Of course I have many names already picked out, but my SO is quite picky, so we shall see!!

It's so funny cause most of my pet's names are on your overused list. Sorry about that, but in my defense, I didn't name any of them. Dogs- Buddy, Holly (Buddy Holly), Max (twice), Gus, Bella, Harley
Cats- Tiger and Midnight. I imagine names like Butterscotch, Fluffy, Skinny, and Angel aren't all that exciting either.
More cats that weren't on your list - Mia, Leona, Rascal, Sassy (on a boy, I'm not sure why), Dasha, Jake, Jade, Lucy, Nosey, Chloe, Santa, and a few simply called 'Cow Cats'. We had a lot of cats, mostly because we needed them for mousing. The dogs were to keep coyotes, raccoons, skunks, and possums away.Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world. - Albert Einstein
Girls: Seraphine, Kristabel, Magdalena, Shiloh, Opal, Jobie, Calla, Seeley, Noelle, Mara, Lucille
Boys: Robin, Gabriel, Mackenzie, Nash, Phillip, Raphael, Edmund, Abraham, Lewis, Pierce, Link
Current Crushes: Mackie and Devlin

I know so many dogs called Alfie and Max. We are getting our very first puppy tomorrow, and one of my Dad's conditions was that he doesn't have a "human" name. We brainstormed over dinner and only a couple of joke names were passed about before my Dad said Zappa (after Frank Zappa of course) we all said it was an awesome name and we went to brainstorming girls. We never "officially" settled, but a week later we went to visit a puppy and when the breeder asked if we had thought of a name my Dad instantly said Zappa. He's an all black labxspringer, and he has a tiny little white beard under his bottom lip which freakishly is a bit Zappa-esque!
As for other animals, ive had a lot of small animals over the years.
Hamsters were:
Pepper
Porridge
Boris
Dilly
Pippin
Keith
Ronnie (adopted from an irresponsible friend!)
Little Bear
Gerbils called Dumbledore and Gandalf. Also adopted from an irresponsible friend.
Guineapigs called Buttercup and Jasmine. And a rabbit called Lily.
Currently have two rats called Buddy and Casper
My aunt and uncle are cat mad. They have had Dougie for longer than their 14 year old son! And since Dougie, many have been and gone... Lucy, Gus, Zero, Minnie, Luna, Nobby, Copper, Pud, Caspar. Only Minnie and Pud are still alive/in their care.
And they had rabbits called Yip-Yip, Bun-Yip and Jack Frost.

I completely agree with everything you said! I was just thinking about this the other day because I'm currently house sitting for a lady that has two cats and a dog. They're such typical names that I was a little disappointed. The cats are B.K. (stands for Big Kat, Black Kat, Baby Kat etc...) and Socks (black cat with white feet) and the dog is Lucky.
With my own pets I gave myself the freedom to name the a little more creatively. Storybook (Story) is my youngest cat and Desdemona Lioncourt (Mona) is my oldest. I like naming my animals after things that have my interest at the time that I get them. In the past I've had cats named Jabba the Hutt and Soon (that last one named after Audrey Hepburn's cat, Tomorrow. She used to say, "It'll be ok, Tomorrow.")

Our cats are named after scientists, but not ones that are well-known outside of "science land." We are thinking of adopting a dog or two at some point, and they will probably be named after something obscure and law-related. The vet and vet techs will have even more fun with our animals' names than they already do.

Our dog is Frankie - named after a dog in one of our son's books....'this is my dog, he's called Frankie. He should chase sheep, but he's too cranky'.
Our cat is a russian black and is named Koshka (Kosh), which is Russian for cat. Probably not terribly original.
Budgie - Paco
Recently all the dogs at the puppy training seem to have human names - Bailey, Cooper, Dakota, Max etc
