    Tacky?

Is it a bit tacky for a little girl names Violet to have a purple nursery?

I don't think it's tacky. It might be a little cutesy if you went over the top with purple-ness or if her clothes, shoes, bibs, etc. were all also purple too.

Our oldest daughter's name is Scarlett and yes, she had and still does have alot of red stuff! We did her nursery in primary colors.

Not at all. If there's some variation it's great.

Like doing it mainly cream, with pops of violet purple around the room. Such as toys, accessories, maybe dots or stripes.

Not at all, it sounds like it'd be beautiful. I have a Violet and as a general rule I try to avoid purple clothes, they usually result in exclamations of "Wow, Violets wearing violet!".

If her name is Violet I presume you like purple, there is no escaping the immediate link to the flower and colour with the name Violet. But the link is AWESOME, I think it is fun. Life is meant to be fun, she is a baby so make life fun! No need to be sticking to serious thought when you are talking about a room for a baby- go OTT!!!
I would suggest white walls with a violet feature wall either painted or in a funky purple toned wallpaper (not too infantile), accessorise using purple, white and a hint of green. A check or patterned quilt in white, purple and green, purple linen... all too cute! You can adapt the room as she grows, but my 14yo still likes purple, so I think it is a safe and loved girly choice.
