I know a little Melissa. I call her Missy Lissy as a nn.
It is a classic known name and I like it on her.

I think its a bit dated personally. I too knew a fair few Melissa's growing up, from both sides of the tracks, so I don't have any real negative associations, just bland ones.

I think if I hadn't known so many I would love it because it is a pretty name.

I can't even tell you how common -lissa names are where I'm from. It's an alright name, yeah, but it is common and kind of dated. I like Melanie tons better, mostly because at this point, Clarissa is the only -issa name I can stand.

My hubs asked me last name about the name Melissa for our little girl. I told him if it was 1988 I would name her that in a heartbeat. I do think Melissa is a very pretty name that I have loved in the past. All of the Melissa's I've known are blond, pretty, smart and wealthy.

I actually don't mind Mel as a nn. Probably bc I knew a Melissa that went by Mel and she was really cool. I like ashthedreamer's suggestion of Lissie as a nn, I think that freshens up the name.

Although it's a pretty name...to be honest it does sound a bit dated. Much like my name (Tara), you can usually tell when someone was born if their name is Melissa (70s/80s). That being said, it's still a cute name and if you named a little girl Melissa now she would most likely be the only one in her class...which is a good thing!

I think it's a touch dated but you could update it with a different nickname. Instead of Mel or (my least fav) Missy, maybe try Lissa, Mella, Millie, Mia, etc. I think that a non traditional nn may update the name nicely. But otherwise, Melissa to me falls into the same category as Rachel, Christina, Danielle.. vaguely dated but still usable.
