My first thought was Brighton, which has already been suggested, but alas! It's a B name! And now that you're open to dropping the -n ending, what about Grady? That way you'd have three -n names and three -y names. Vaughn, Rogan, Berkley, and Grady. Vaugn, Rogan, and Grady. Grady Smith. I think that's my favorite for you

Okay this has truly been an epic battle of proportions that I never thought would last this long. You have ALL been so great in throwing out suggestions and great opinions which, both my hubby and I have deeply valued and loved - THANK YOU.
We are at weeks now and we have TWO names that we will consider on this magical day, when it arrives. We have never done that before but, 2 options are better than zero, right? Normally we or at least one of us has THE name that we love deeply.
Our two options are as follows:
Maverick - we like the nn Mave, Mack with the option that he can use Rick if he wants main stream later on... Perception on this one worries me but, this has been the ONLY name for a month or so.
My hubby just threw out yesterday he likes the name Hendrik. What is so funny about this - I have had it on every stinking list that I have put together (which has been a conservative estimate of HUNDREDS of lists). My Great Grandfather colonized our family in American from Norway and his birth name was Hendrik so this is a unique name (which is an important criteria to us) AND, has a very important family tie.
Now, remember why we have the unique criteria. With the last name Smith and purchasing a house or rental property has been an immense pain in bothering our friends in signing affidavits due to OUR common names and other people with the same name that cannot handle their money. So would we be setting this boy up for the same kind of fate with a nn as common as Mack or Henry? At least we have a proven record and can caution the child to ALWAYS use his full given name on any and ALL legal documents to help prevent any such occurrances. Something I never knew.
So how does this sound:
Vaughn Vaughn
Rogan Rogan
Berkley Berkley
and and
Maverick Hendrik

If people are a bit funny about accrediting you for a rental property or house with the surname Smith I think that it would be worse with the name Maverick Smith.
I can see a Vaughan Maverick Smith no problem AND I just love Vaughan it is a strong, handsome name this is my favourite.
I know a Dutch Hendrik who goes by the nn of Hank which I don't like much but I love the name Hendrik, however a Henry Smith sounds super respectable and I would definitely consider naming him Henry. Combo of Henry Vaughan.

Sorry Rollo I wasn't clear. Our current children are Vaughn, Rogan and Berkley. As for getting accredited when making purchases we have no problems in that area. We have SUPER common names with EXCELLENT credit. So, when we buy anything we are approved right away, however... there are pages upon pages of people with the same name that cannot handle their money. For the life of me I have NO idea why the banks and gov't do not go off of social security numbers. Alas they do not and it falls on us to hire lawyers and ask friends to sign affidavits to prove we are not responsible for their debt. It's all so STUPID - sorry but, incredibly frustrating. Hence the reasoning for the importance of unique names such as Maverick or Hendrik.

Thanks for the explanation I didn't realise and I think something unusual has its advantages with a common surname. How inefficient is bureaucracy??
