I named my son Elliott and had a bit of the same concern, but I also don't mind him having a more gender neutral name. To me it's definitely a boys name, and part of the reason I choose it was to make sure that the name wouldn't be lost from the boys list. No one has commented on his name being girly, or anything of the sort.

As an addition, I wouldn't worry too much about girls "taking over" boys' names. It's not like slightly feminine/unisex names have cooties! Speaking as someone who prefers more traditional, gender-specific names, I imagine that parents like to give boys' names to girls because boys' names (and men in general) are traditionally associated with strength and power--who doesn't want those qualities for their little girl (no matter her name) in this day and age? I don't think girls using male names necessarily detracts from the name's more "masculine" qualities. (And if boys stop getting names like Elliot because some parents are starting to give them to girls, then they will become predominantly girls' names...)

Soapbox moment over. Sorry! I truly mean no offense; I just thought I would offer that as another perspective. I still think Elliot is a great choice that is used MUCH more often for boys than girls. All the best!

I agree 100% with this! Elliot doesn't rank at all as a "girls'" name while it's quite popular and well-loved for the boys. I personally don't know anyone with the name Elliot/Elliott that's a girl, and recently I've been hearing announcements of it being used for boys! I think you're totally safe.

I love Elliott for a boy and hate that people have been using it on girls. I've never personally met one, but a woman I work with said when she has a daughter she's going to name her Elliott Flynn (HATE), and that's the only one i've heard of.

It's a boys name. Use it to keep it from becoming a girls name.

Elliot should be left for the boys! Just cuz it's could have the nn Ellie, doesn't mean it should be used for girls! There are not enough good boy's names! It is so frustrating!

I automatically think of the girl Elliot from Scubs... I think it would be okay for a boy maybe?

Elliott is on my boys list. I've known plenty of male Elliotts. I've never actually met a girl with the name though there are the two I know from TV. There's Dr. Elliot Reid from "Scrubs" and Eliot Jones (older sister to the Jones quintuplets) from "Quints by Surprise". But looking at the names of their quints (4 girls and 1 boy), it seems they like boy names for their girls. Two of the quints, Brooklyn and Lila have girly names, while the other two girls, Britton and Ryan have unisex/boyish names. Some people are going to give their girls boy names but I doubt the girls will outnumber the boys with this name.

Elliot is absolutely a boys name! I've never met a girl named Elliot, but I have met a male Elliot. Additionally, there are numerous males with the name in popular culture--Elliott Gould, Elliot Stabler from SVU, Eliot Spencer from Leverage, the kid from ET, and many more. It's a masculine and handsome name.

Just wanted to echo this. The reason why some boys names get "lost" to the girls is because parents stop using them for boys. The girls don't take them or steal them, parents of boys concede them, and most of it seems to be a paranoid response to a name being used for a girl then makes it unusable for a boy.
