    Breccan???

I was just reading a NB blog on cool & unusual boys names and came across Breccan...I kind of like it! Is it too close to Bennett? Am i setting myself up for a B names pattern? If this one turns out to be a girl and we name her Annabel/Annabelle does Breccan sound like a future brother to Bennett and Annabelle?

Also I tried to search both spellings NB uses (Breccan & Breacan) on another site & the names were not found...is it a real name?

I remember seeing it in an Irish baby name book several years ago. I believe the true Irish pronunciation is Breck-AWN. Is that how you're pronouncing it?

I was pronouncing it Breck-ann but I like Breck-awn too. NB says the Breacan spelling is Irish.

Personally, I like the name, but I'm not a fan of this spelling. I'm familiar with Breckin, pronounced Breck-inn. Breccan looks oddly similar to the word wiccan to me.

I thought Breccan was Scottish. I have also seen the spelling Breckin. I kind of like it. I think it is a nice fit with Bennett. If you had any subsequent boys, you might want to stick with another B name. Bennett, Breccan, and Annabel make a nice sibset. I also like Breck.

I'm more familiar with the Breckin spelling...not sure if it's legit or not. I think it and Bennett might be a bit of a tongue twister. I could see accidentally calling each by the others name. The styles of all three names though work nicely in a sibset.
Switching careers and becoming an RN! Sadly mommy plans will have to wait until that's done. Still loving names though!

Brecon Beacons is the name of a mountain range in Wales, so that's what I think of when I see Breccan. If you have a son named Bennett I do think the names are a bit close, and I definitely see what another poster mentioned, that it looks a lot like the word "wiccan" when spelled Breccan.

I love Breccan... and I really like this spelling! My only experience with the name is from the actor, Brecken Myers. At first glance, I think Breccan and Bennett are a bit close....but then I said them aloud a few times, and realized it really isn't bad at all. In fact, I like it! (And I usually dislike when the first two children have the same first initial... it normally gets parents stuck in the same-letter rut)

I especially like Bennett, Annabel and Breccan, or Bennett, Breccan and Annabel!

St. Breccan was an early 6th century Irish saint who was baptised by St. Patrick. He was the son of the Prince of Thomond (in Limerick) and grandson of the first Christian ruler of that territory. The townland of Ardbraccan (in County Meath, Ireland) attributes it's name to St. Breccan. He wrote some prophecies about Ireland's wars and the coming of the Anglo-Normans to Ireland. When he heard that the Oirghialla (an ancient and degenerate tribe) lived around Ardbraccan he swore that he would convert them to Christianity. He was successful in this. He finally went to the Aran Islands off the coast of Galway and and founded Temple Breccan on Inis Mhor - the largest of the Aran Islands and is buried there. Breccan is an Irish boys name and is pronounced Breck-Ann. Hope this helps.
