Am I the ONLY "berry" that doesn't like --------

    Nicknames???!!!

I have never really wanted my children to have nicknames...Is there something wrong with me:-)

    My names are:

    Evan James - no NN
    Rachel Christine - no NN
    Clara Anneliese - no NN
    Anna Lisette - no NN
    Juliet Christine - no NN
    Jackson Porter - no NN
Benjamin Edward - could be "Ben" but I love Benjamin more and would call him by Benjamin
    Callum Davis - no NN

It seems everybody looks for nicknames and I never have... Not that there is anything at all wrong with them. some of them are really nice but I guess I just like the full, unabbreviated name... Is there anybody else out there that thinks like I do about this???

I don't hate them, but I agree for my own children I think of full names I want and don't think of nn possibilities at all.
In fact I am wary of picking Middle names with potential obvious or non obvious! nn's

Anouk Elodie- I don't want Anouk to suddenly become just another Ella, if Anouk is too foreign or not liked by some ears.
I love Ottilie too but don't want it butchered into Tilly. Even though I like Tilly, the point is Ottilie is the the name I love, not Tilly.

    Boys:
Auden- luckily I can't see a real nn there for a boy.
Dashiell- worry about Dash. just no no!

Winifred is one of the few names I like for it's nn Winnie more than the proper name.
I also like Kate but don't like Katherine at all.

I actually do not like nicknames, either! My children (Kyle and Emily) do not go by any nn's. In fact, whenever someone calls Emily "Em," she corrects that person.

I do, however, like nn's for Elizabeth - Bess and Libby are my favorites.

We thought we picked out a name that was nn free, but it turns out that EVERYONE has a nn for her: my nephews made one up, my husband (who was the leader of the no NN movement) has one, each grandparent has a different one, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends have their own (AND she has ones she has made for them!). Watching these "secret" languages and special names develop as our daughter has been welcomed into our family and our "village" has been one of the most fun parts of the first two years. Pick a name that you love and then watch the magic unfold!

I'm not all hot for nicknames either. I know my kids will most likely have nicknames ( and I'm not fooling myself thinking I will get to choose them) but I don't obsess over what names will get what nicknames.
My only big pet peeve is is beautiful girl names shortened to tomboy nicknames like Sam for Samantha. Makes me crazy that girls give up sophisticated femininity to be one of the boys.
I type on an iPhone and take no responsibility for typos, auto-correction, or strange grammar in my posts.

Being on this site has warmed me to nicknames a bit but they're not the most important thing to me. I like nicknames that are intuitive, like Ben for Benjamin, or that come naturally after the child has been born based on their personality.

There are only a few names where I prefer the nickname to the given name. Like another poster mentioned I love Winnie for Winifred and I also love Tillie for Matilda.

I'm right there with you!! Although it may be unavoidable with close family members and friends having nicknames or pet names, I never want my child to go by a nickname for everyone. I don't really understand why someone would chose a name that they do not plan on using for their child. Of course once my children were older, they could have the choice of going by a nickname or switching to their middle name if they wanted to. I don't have any children yet but all of my favorite names are longer names that could have a few possible nicknames--like Georgina, Agatha, Archibald, Charleston etc. Hopefully I'll avoid them!!!!!

I adore names with lots of NN possibilities. I think this is actually due to having a name without real NNs myself (I'm a Clare). I was always jealous of my siblings and friends with all their cool names while I was stuck with just the one name.
My father (A David who HATES being called Dave) actually selected my name with the purpose of not giving me any NNs.
