The Unique name OR the Popular name?
So from the start I have said two things about our daughters name...I want it to start with an S, and I want it to be unique. Well now, my husband and I have it down to two names...An 'S' name that is VERY popular, and a 'non-S' name that is very unique:
Sofia Stottle
Aviana Stottle
So how do we decide which is best?
The unique name or the popular 'S' name?
Her middle name will be May for sure because that is the month we got married. =)

Re: The Unique name OR the Popular name?
I really don't want to be rude or hurtful.....Avianna is pretty in theory, but when I see it, all I see is avian bird flu.
Sofia is beautiful, but I think there are S names out there that would meet your requirements.
Sabra
Sela
Sabrina
Selena
Solei
Sasha
Sylvia
Sylvie
Susannah
Sosie
Suzette
My picks would be Sela, Sylvia, or Susannah! Good Luck!

Re: The Unique name OR the Popular name?
UNIQUE!
Consider this: though Sofia is absolutely gorgeous, given it's current popularity up there with Emma, Ava, and Isabelle, could be the Jennifer and Jessica of this decade. Jennifer and Jessica are both great names, but they are forever associated with the 80s. Give your daughter a name that will stand the test of time and always be very uniquely hers - not one that she has to share with thousands of other little munchkins!

I prefer Sofia, but I think the real question you should be asking yourself is "REGARDLESS of popularity or what letter it starts with, which name do I love the most?"

Re: The Unique name OR the Popular name?
I thought of the bird flu too when reading about Aviana and I really like Sophia but is it too popular for you? Aviana could even be shortened to Ava another beautiful but popular name.
If you wish to use a popular name then Ava Sophia May would be lovely.
If however you wanted something less popular then we could look at something else.
Adele Sophia May or Adelina Sophia May
Delphine Aurora May
Sylvie Sophia May
Celeste Arianna (has the S sound in Celeste) May
Amelie/Amelia Soren/Seren/Starr May

Re: The Unique name OR the Popular name?
I normally err on the side of not-in-the-top-two, but Aviana really does remind me a little too much of birds. Sofia might be a little overly trendy, but it is a classic and familiar name (I don't think it will suffer in quite the way that Jennifer has, since there are people of all ages named Sophia/Sophie, whereas really only 30-somethings are called Jennifer). As an aside, I really liked Safina/Savina as a rarer alternative to Sofia. (I also really love Sofia pronounced so-FYE-ah, but that is probably a little too rare and counter-intuitive to get away with  ).
