    Helena: Hattie or Laney? POLL!

Considering putting Helena on my list. If the combo was Helena Kitty Elizabeth, do you think Hattie would be a viable nickname? I think so but I'm not sure. I love Hattie, and like Laney a lot too, but not quite love (yet!).

Re: Helena: Hattie or Laney? POLL!

Oh, P.S. Hubby's mom's middle name is Elaine, so Helena honors her. So this combo honors his mom, my mom, and his grandma. Plus some others.

It reminds me of Viola a little bit, but without the Incredibles association (or the whole rape thing, which has been bothering my husband). I think it's a nice middle ground between off-beat, classic and ultra feminine. I think it also leaves the door open for almost any name for a potential third child.

I pronounce it Heh-LANE-ah, or however you'd write that.

Re: Helena: Hattie or Laney? POLL!

I love it! My first thought was Kitty, despite how sweet it is, is slightly nickname-ish, but I think that the lovely Elizabeth makes up for it. Hattie could work, but it is a bit of a stretch - nothing that you couldn't pull of though, with all the 'Plum's short for Victoria, and the 'Birdie's short for Bridgetts. I much prefer Hattie to Laney, although they're both adorable.

I'm not really one for 'sibsets', but I do think that Helena and Dashiell are slightly mish-mashed, that is, Helena being classic and soft whilst Dashiell is very spunky and cool. I still like them together, and although a bit mish-mash, they sound great as a pair. I also agree that it [i]does[i/]leave room for almost any other name for a possible 3rd child.

Re: Helena: Hattie or Laney? POLL!

I love, love Helena and I think Hattie makes a fine nickname (it makes as much sense for Helena as it does for Harriet as far as I can tell). I'm not a fan of Laney. But really, Helena by itself with no nickname is great.

I think Helena Kitty Elizabeth is too long. Nine syllables before you even get to the surname - quite a mouthful!

Edit: I saw in your previous post you were considering Kitty Ruth. I think Helena Kitty Ruth is shorter, cleaner and less frilly. Ruth serves to ground the airy Helena and precious Kitty. Sounds good to me!

Re: Helena: Hattie or Laney? POLL!

I'm excited about the motly positive response! We decided that if we use this name, her nickname would definitely be Hattie. And if we decide to have a Hattie, she'll be Helena instead of any other H name. We've loved Hattie for a long time so this is a pretty exciing prospect!

I'm not a stickler about sibsets, I just like them to sound like the same people named them all, ya know? I think Dashiell and Helena do achieve that. She brings out the sophistication in Dashiell, while he lightens her up a little, I think. And Dash and Hattie are so spunky and sweet. I love it!

Plus, like you guys said, there are plenty of nicknames that are a lot bigger stretch than Hattie for Helena. I think she would go by Hattie most of the time anyway, so it's not like it would be "short for" it, ya know? But I do love Helena so I would be perfectly happy if she decided to go by that later on (unlike if I named her Harriet!). And with this combo I would honor three+ people AND get to use one of my favorite nicknames!

I'm not sure I mind Helena Kitty Elizabeth being so many syllables. It reminds me of a name from the Telegraph announcements, which are like Christmas to me, lol. Kitty Ruth just doesn't excite me, ya know? I think it doesn't bother me partly because Helena is fairly short in letter count, whereas Francesca Kitty Elizabeth looks unbalanced to me.

I am dead set on using Margo for a second daughter. Occassional nickname would be Goldie, but not used to the extent Hattie would be or Dash is. Mostly just for fun in the family. So, Dashiell, Helena and Margo? Dash, Hattie and Margo. Dash, Hattie and Goldie. I love it, personally, not sure everyone else will though. Like I said, I'm not worried about them all being exactly the same style or anything, just jiving together, if that makes sense.

Thanks for the input, and thanks for all the votes! Helena is officially a contender!
