December 8th, 2011 03:05 PM #15I find that extremely offensive and snobbish. God forbid I or anyone else name a child Edward or Alice or Jasper or what have you, because, oh no, it's a Twilight name! Yeah, because it's so difficult to say, "Yes, like the character. No, he/she is not named after him/her."Also, the names Stephenie Meyer chose for her characters in Twilight are largely lovely, elegant names. Unfortunately, if I met a small child named any name that is featured in Twilight, I would assume his parents had terrible taste in literature.
Give me a break.
Regarding the original post, the only Harry Potter name I'd advise people to stay as far away from as possible is Nymphadora, because all I can think of is nymphomania. Anything else is probably fine.Annie, mid-twenties, vegetarian, name lover. No kids yet, just two furbabies - Roxy & Layla.

My favorite Harry Potter name is Minerva. I absolutely love it and all of its positive connotations. And the nickname Minnie-- built in theme for the kid's nursery!
Harry-- y
Ronald-- n (Love the character, but can't get past 'Ronald McDonald.')
Hermione-- n (I like the idea of the name and how it looks written down, but not how it sounds.)
Rubeus-- y (Dude, it'd be so cool to see a baby named after Hagrid.)
Albus-- n (Maybe as a middle name.)
Percival-- y
Ginevra-- y
Remus-- y
Andromeda-- y (Even though it makes me think of dromedary camels.)
Nymphadora-- n
Cornelius-- n (It'd be fine if not for the 'Corn' syllable.)
Sirius-- n (Too many puns!)
Bathilda-- n
Bellatrix--n (I like the name itself, but can't get past the character.)
Phineas-- y
Pius-- n
Elphias-- n
Myrtle-- n
Lucius-- y
Narcissa-- n (Why would anyone name their child this? I've seen it before, too.)
Draco-- n
Regulus-- n
Aberforth-- n
Dudley-- n
Vernon-- n
Kendra-- n
Perenelle-- n
Merope-- n
Marvolo-- n
Morfin-- n
Mafalda-- n
Gilderoy-- n
Neville-- maybe. This is the only one I can't decide. The character's so great, it makes me like his goofy name more.
Minerva-- y
Kingsley-- y
Severus-- n (Horrible name. I don't care how cool the dude is.)
Luna-- y
Dilys-- n

Harry: Yes
Ronald: Yes (But the only other Ron I know is also known as Bubba, and he's my best friend's brother!)
Hermione: Yes
Rubeus: Yes
Albus: Maybe as a mn?
Percival: Yes
Ginevra: Yes
Remus: Yes
Andromeda: Yes
Nymphadora: Yes
Cornelius: No! (The name was not redeemed by an awesome character.)
Sirius: Yes, 100000000 times yes.
Bathilda: No
Bellatrix: I want to say yes because it's cool, but I have it in the ranks of Jezebel, Delilah, and Salome.
Phineas: Yes
Pius: No
Elphias: No
Myrtle: NO--It was fusty before, but naming your baby after the bullied ghost who haunts the toilets? And then sending her to public school?
Lucius: No.
Narcissa: No.
Draco: No. I think this name is too heavily tied to this character, who never could muster the courage to do what was right.
Regulus: No.
Aberforth: No.
Dudley: NO.
Vernon: NO.
Kendra: Was this in HP? I just connect it with the girl from Girls Next Door (And that's a HUGE NO.)
Perenelle: Yes.
Merope: Yes.
Marvolo: NO.
Morfin: No.
Mafalda: No.
Gilderoy: NO. He was such a twit, anyway.
Neville: Yes. He DEFINITELY redeemed the name. (BUT..I would stick with it as a mn.)
Minerva: YES.
Kingsley: No.
Severus: Yes. (Again as a mn only, and only if you reeeeeallly love Snape.)
Luna: Yes.
Dilys: No. Aside from the fact she might acquire the nn "Dill," there is another nn to be found there--I knew someone with a similar name in high school, and she was teased mercilessly.Last edited by shellezbellez; December 11th, 2011 at 01:52 PM.

I love Harry Potter, and HP names, so I figured I'd do this.
Harry - Yes

Phineas - Absolutely.
Pius - No
Elphias - Probably
Myrtle - Yes
Lucius - Tough one... I suppose so, yes.
Narcissa - Well, it's a beautiful name, but the narcissist/Narcissus associations are so strong that I'm on the fence.

Regulus - Because it's a minor character, maybe.
Aberforth - No.
Dudley - Yes, but I wouldn't.
Vernon - No.

For me useability comes down to a combination of factors: how well known the character is, whether he/she was a positive or negative figure, and whether or not I have good-to-neutral associations for the name outside of Harry Potter.
Harry: yes
Ronald: yes
Hermione: yes
Rubeus: no, not with the word "rube" in there.
Albus: no...and Albus Severus gets a double no.
Percival: yes, but with reservations about its general dorkiness. I like just Percy a lot more than Percival.
Ginevra: yes, and I love it!
Remus: no, sadly. I don't think the positive association of Remus Lupin is enough to counteract the slang meaning of "ream" or the racist baggage of Uncle Remus.
Andromeda: yes
Nymphadora: OMG, no!
Cornelius: yes, but with the same reservations I have for Percival.
Sirius: no
Bathilda: no
Bellatrix: no
Phineas: yes
Pius: yes, because I think it's more associated with popes than with HP. I really dislike it, though.
Elphias: yes
Myrtle: yes
Lucius: no, but ask me again in 25 years
Narcissa: no
Draco: no
Regulus: no
Aberforth:no
Dudley: no, but more for the word "dud" than because of HP
Vernon: yes
Kendra: yes
Perenelle: yes
Merope: no
Marvolo: no
Morfin: no
Mafalda: yes
Gilderoy: no
Neville: yes
Minerva: yes
Kingsley: yes
Severus: no
Luna: yes
Dilys: yes
