Cooper for a GIRL?
Please help! We are considering naming our girl Cooper, but I'm just too afraid what other people will think. It seems like everyone says Cooper is strictly a boy name, but since it is traditionally a surname it shouldn't be gender specific (ie Taylor, Mckenzie). I feel like the name could surge in popularity among girls pretty soon. Do you know of any girls named Cooper? I would appreciate any input. Oh and I've already thought of the 'pooper-scooper' nickname. Thank you so much!

Re: Cooper for a GIRL?
Most occupational names that end in "er" are too masculine for a girl in my opinion. Cooper is one of those names that really should be left for the boys. Harper is a better choice for a girl as it has a female literary connection with Harper Lee, author of "To Kill A Mockingbird". Sorry but I'm not a fan of this choice for a girl at all. Save it for a boy or use it in the middle name spot. Other surnames that would work well for girls are Auden and Ellery. Best wishes!
All the best,
Mischa.

Re: Cooper for a GIRL?
I know of one little girl named Cooper. I prefer it for a boy, and on Nameberry you aren't likely to get much love for it, but it's no worse than any other, more popular surname-as-a-first-name on a girl.

Re: Cooper for a GIRL?
I will be honest -- I don't care for the name on either gender, and I really can't see it on a girl. I am not big on surnames and boys names on girls, though. I really can't say that I would enjoy having the name Cooper, but of course you never know......the right girl could pull it off.

Re: Cooper for a GIRL?
I expected the name wouldn't get much love! I am open to any suggestions. From what you may have gathered, I'm not really into the girly names. I don't want anything that's really trendy right now (Olivia, Eva, Emma) and I don't care for classic type names either (Grace, Frances, Emily) I am having such a hard time. due in 8 weeks and hubby is pretty much set on Cooper. Help!!!

Re: Cooper for a GIRL?
Cooper really doesn't surprise me any more than Greer, Taylor or Jamie. I don't care for it personally- I have an etymologically male name and have always hated it- but it's your kid, and you should choose a name you like. I consider occupational surnames male, because they wouldn't be used for females when they first came about. "Cooper" was a word referring to a male in that occupation, and later a last name. Similarly, Mackenzie means "Son of Kenzie (via Coinneach)" and Taylor referred to a Taylor (virtually all of whom were male). For these reasons, I consider -son and occupational surnames masculine. I don't like boy's names on girls, especially having one myself, but, like I said, it's your child, do what you want.

Re: Cooper for a GIRL?
I've never heard of Cooper on a girl, but I don't think it's terrible. My daughter's name is Logan and I get either "love it" or "hate it." Have you considered Logan, Mason, or Blake? All of those have the same feel as Cooper, but are used more on girls than Cooper is (at least IMO). We're having daughter number 2 this spring and are naming her Holland, though Harper was a close second.
